Brookes Legacy took a big step toward leaving her own legacy on the racetrack, getting the initial stakes win of her career in
the $100,000 Lou Wooten/Sydney Valentini Handicap-RG2 for distaffers at Sunland Park on Jan. 14.
Ridden by jockey Carlos Guillen Chacon, Brookes Legacy broke alertly in the 400-yard test and pressured the early leader Fanncee from the 8-post. In a stiff drive, Brookes Legacy forged to the front of the lane near the wire and prevailed by a neck over Fanncee at the finish. Stopping the timer in :19.495, the final clocking earned a speed index of 101.
The $60,000 winner’s share of the purse increased her bankroll to $115,188. Owned by Oscar Diaz and trained by Armando Alamos, Brookes Legacy is now a winner in three of 10 starts, with all of her wins coming from her last three consecutive outings. Prior to taking down top prize in this stakes race, she won an allowance heat at Zia Park in her initial try
