Minnesota Futurity
CORONA WHITE SOCKS
by Tracy Gantz
Daniel Kjorsvik made a wise claim at Hawthorne, the Illinois Thoroughbred track, in 2014, getting the Minnesota-bred Thoroughbred mare
Holy White Socks for $5,000. He brought her back to Canterbury Park in Minnesota and won two races for state-breds with her before breeding her to Quarter Horse stallions. Holy White Socks’ son Corona White Socks captured the $70,350 Minnesota Futurity at Canterbury on Sept. 9.
Corona White Socks broke his maiden at Canterbury on July 28, his fourth start, before run- ning second in his Aug. 25 Minnesota Futurity trial. In the final, ridden by jockey Nik Goodwin, Corona White Socks broke slightly inward, but recovered quickly to run straight for the wire, winning by a head in :17.805 for 350 yards, which was good for a 93 speed index.
Patrick Swan trains Corona White Socks for Kjorsvik, who also bred the gelding. Holy White Socks has produced one other starter, the Quarter Horse Holy Storm, second in the Minnesota Derby and third in the Cash Caravan Stakes last year.
Robert and Julie Petersen’s homebred Western Reserve (Im A Fancy PYC-Western Fun) finished second. Ry Eikleberry rode the filly for trainer Edward Hardy. Western Reserve had won three of her previous four previous races.
Summer Run Inc.’s homebred Change N Gears (Hes Relentless-Engine Number Nine) ran third under jockey Luis Valenzuela. Jason Olmstead trains the gelding, who broke his maiden in July.
Followed by Shrimpee (Hes Relentless-Stel Rare), Furiousity (Furyofthewind-Six It Up), Game Gone West (Westover Wildcat TB-Aint No Game), Pappy Boyington (Apollitical Blood-Silver Fastbac), Moonin The Class (Moonin The Eagle-LK Classy Perk) and Living In The Past (Little PYC-Jazzing Jackie). Sweet Carol Line was scratched.
Minnesota Derby
VO FANTASTIC AIRA
by Tracy Gantz
VO Fantastic Aira stretched his three-race win- ning streak to four in the $67,250 Minnesota Derby at Canterbury Park on Sept. 9.
VO Fantastic Aira went off as the 7-10 favorite in the 400-yard Minnesota Derby. With Ry Eikleberry aboard, the gelding broke well on the sloppy
track. Several horses also vied for the lead, but VO Fantastic Aira never gave up, coming back on at
the wire. Three horses crossed the finish together, with VO Fantastic Aira nabbing the head victory in :19.978, posting a 95 speed index.
Edward Hardy trains Vo Fantastic Aira for owner Corey Wilmes. At two last year, VO Fantastic Aira did not win, but he finished the season with a third in the Minnesota Futurity. Second in his first 2020 start, he has since been unbeatable, breaking his maiden and adding an allowance win prior to qualifying the fastest in the Minnesota Derby during the Aug. 25 trials.
Rodney Von Ohlen bred VO Fantastic Aira out of his homebred stakes winner Fly Eyeann. The mare has produced one other starter, 2018 Minnesota Futurity winner Fantastic Feelyn.
Cynthia Besser’s homebred Johnee B (Separatist- Little Miss Hempness) was 2nd under jockey Nakia Ramirez for trainer Randall Weidner. A winner
last year, the colt in 2020 has run 3rd four times. Myownersbroke (BP Phoenix Reign-Hit The Throtle), owned, trained, and bred by Mark Wilson, ran third. Nik Goodwin rode the gelding, who broke his maiden in August. Followed by Wicked 6 (Ocean Runaway-Six It Up), Beep Beep Zoom Zoom (Hes Relentless-Etta Betta Zoom), Jess A Lil Cash (JA
Jess Perfect-Dimples Dash O Denim), Find A Rider (BP Phoenix Reign-Takin On The Crunch), Favorite Gramma (Favorite Cartel-Whereshesupposedtobe) and Kool Attempt (Kool Wagon-Delazoom). Jazzing Joanna was scratched.
Cash Caravan Stakes
DICKEY BOB
by Tracy Gantz
The broodmare Paint Or More, owner/breeder Lunderborg LLC, and trainer Jason Olmstead pretty much own the Cash Caravan Stakes at Canterbury Park. For three consecutive years, Olmstead has trained two Lunderborg runners out of Paint Or More to finish one-two. For the Aug. 25 running, it was 5-year-old Dickey Bob’s turn, as 6-year-old full brother PYC Jess Bite Mydust finished second.
That was the same result in 2018, whereas it was reversed in 2019. And the margins are always close—a head in 2018, a neck in 2019, and a head this year.
Dickey Bob had most recently won the Prairie Dash Stakes and Bob Morehouse Stakes, so he went off as the 4-5 favorite. With Luis Valenzuela aboard, he jumped out to the lead at the start and stayed in front for the entire 400 yards, stopping the timer in :19.965, posting a 95 speed index.
Lunderborg LLC bred both horses in Minnesota. Dickey Bob’s earlier stakes wins include the 2017 Minnesota Futurity, 2018 and 2019 Bob Morehouse Stakes, and 2018 Minnesota Derby.
Paint Or More won the 2011 North Central QHRA Futurity and finished third in the 2012 Canterbury Park Derby. The mare has produced four starters, all winners, including stakes-placed Jess Rocket Man.
Nik Goodwin rode second-place PYC Jess Bite Mydust (Apollitical Jess-Paint Or More). PYC Jess Bite Mydust has won five stakes.
Fred Pelzer’s homebred Fire N Guns (Freighttrain B-Garters N Guns) finished third. Evan Herman rode the 4-year-old gelding for trainer Lexon Backhous. Fire N Guns is a two-time winner.
Holy Storm (Red Storm Cat-Holy White Socks TB) finished fourth of the quartet. Polar Xpress was scratched.
