Colors Of The Wind P&A Stakes
DTL SAMUREYE
by Danny Camp
DTL Samureye has won 15 races from 24 outs under several trainers and several riders. His latest was the $24,250 Colors Of The Wind Paint &
Appaloosas Stakes at Retama Park on Aug. 29. The 5-year-old gelding broke third from the
2-post under Victor Urieta Jr. and quickly secured the lead by the first call. He proved the best by cross- ing the wire with an impressive 2-length lead.
He completed the 350 yards in :17.695 and posted a 95 speed index. DTL Samureye brought home the $14,307 winner’s share of the purse for owner Almada Racing and trainer Alonso Neri, boosting his total bankroll to $183,793.
This win marks the gelding’s 10th stakes victory. Among those are the Speedhorse Lone Star Paint & Appaloosa Futurity-G1 and Mister Lewie Memorial Handicap-G1. DTL Samureye was the 2019 World Champion and holds four additional Champion titles.
Dean & Tonya Lester bred DTL Samureye out of Eysa Savvy Queen, who was a finalist in the OHA Futurity-G2. The mare has produced 100% winners from six starters, including four stakes placed run- ners. DTL Samureye is her first stakes winner.
Little Texas APHA (Little PYC-Memories Of Texas) ran a steady race to bank 2nd place money for owner Oswaldo Hernandez. The Alonso Neri trainee had Nestor Duran aboard. Royal Chachingalinga ApHC (Special Royal Corona QH-Cha Ching) over- came a generic start to finish 3rd under Jose Vega
for owner Fabiola Vega and trainer Oscar Nunez. Followed by Bye The Wire APHA (CRM Livewire APHA-Jennis Gone Bye QH), Invisable Paint Brush APHA (CRM Livewire APHA-Like Big Bux), VP Yawls Slick Winner APHA (VP Slick Winner-Yawls Victoria), Wicked Indian ApHC (Appsolutely Wicked-Sheza Fast Gal), CEC Mean Ole Lucy APHA (Duke Kahanamoku QH-Mean Ole Lady). Live Moonshine APHA was scratched.
Ontario Bred Futurity
TWIXT OF FATE
by Tracy Gantz
Trainer Michelle Woodley helped raise Twixt Of Fate, which made the gelding’s victory in the $50,106 Ontario Bred Futurity at Ajax Downs on Aug. 26 that much more special.
Gary McNichol bred Twixt Of Fate in Ontario, Canada, from Eyesa Quick, and Richard Wincikaby purchased him this past spring. Twixt Of Fate debuted in the Aug. 5 Ontario Bred Futurity trials, racing erratically for jockey Ed Walton, but still qualifying the fastest.
Walton said that Twixt Of Fate was more profes- sional in the final. A couple of the 2-year-olds took a while to load, yet Twixt Of Fate stood fairly quietly. He broke second and quickly vied for the lead, win- ning by a neck in :15.574 for 300 yards, which was good for a 90 speed index.
The gelding is out of stakes-placed Eyesa Quick, who has produced five starters, all winners. Those include Later Tater, who finished second in the 2017 Ontario Sires Stakes Derby and third in the Ontario Sires Stakes Futurity.
Milena Kwiecien’s homebred Countryfried Chicken (Country Chicks Man-La Wanda) finished second. Helen Vanek rode the gelding for trainer Jason Pascoe. Countryfried Chicken has finished second three times and third once in four starts. Carol and Jaime Robertson’s Homebred Had To Be Relentless (Hes Relentless-Had To Be Fandango) ran third under jockey Tony Phillips. Bryn Robertson trains the gelding, who finished second and third in his two prior starts. Completing the field were Bogie Wheels (El Night Shift-Cash Into Vegas), Whisky James (Ivory James-Easily Holland), Goodness Graceious (Louisiana Senator-Dr Steppin Out), Kool Kastillo (Kool Wagon-Tres Seis Smooches), Memory Of Griffin (One Fabulous Eagle-Is It Memorex), Kitsawinner (Winners Award-Kitarisa), and Sunday Quickie (Sugarman Perry-Im Aquicktrick).
Ontario Bred Derby
HANOVER HILL CHALSEE
by John Moorehouse
After topping the qualifying ladder for the Ontario Bred Derby, Hanover Hill Chalsee came back and won the $43,085 stakes held at Ajax Downs on Sept. 2.
The three-year-old chestnut filly logged her fourth win in nine career starts, with all of those victories coming this year. This marked the first stakes victory for Hanover Hill Chalsee, who was home-bred by the Picov Cattle Company.
The filly broke from the 6-post and was in the middle of the pack entering the stretch, then made a driving finish under jockey Ed Walton to hit the wire first by a head. Aided by a 20 mph tailwind, Hanover Hill Chalsee generated an 85 speed index and brought home a $17,234 payday that improved her total earnings to $37,954.
Trained by Richard Kennedy, Hanover Hill Chalsee entered the derby as the top qualifier after finishing her 300-yard heat in :15.653 on Aug. 19. She wasn’t quite that quick in the stakes final, cover- ing the distance in :15.707.
Hanover Hill Chalsee now has posted three straight victories and becomes the first stakes winner among the three foals produced by her dam, lightly raced Secret Sugarwoman.
One Kool Dynasty (FDD Dynasty-One Kool Bud), the post-time favorite, finished second for owner Belinda Taggart and trainer Jason Pascoe. Helen Vanek did the riding. Eazy Street (Mighty B Valiant- Easily Holland), a multiple stakes winner, placed third for Carol and Jaime Robertson. Bryn Robertson is the trainer and Tony Phillips was aboard.
Rowdy And Bodacious (Bodacious Jess-Make Us A Miracle), Silken Siri (Desirio-Silken Memories), Hot Like Fyre (Look At Magics Form-Extravagant Moves), Get On The Bus Gus (Streakin Six Cartel- Into Fast) and Hey There Giorgi Boy (Giorgino- Mood For A Dash) completed the field. Shaken and Shez Perry Fiesty scratched.
