Minnesota Derby
JESS ROCKET MAN
by Tracy Gantz
Jess Rocket Man loves his home track of Canterbury Park. With his victory in the $60,500 Minnesota Derby on Sept. 8, the Minnesota-bred has started seven times at the track, won five times and finished second twice.
A heavy favorite in the 400-yard Minnesota Derby, Jess Rocket Man even survived a bump at the break. Edwin Escobedo rode Jess Rocket Man, who turned on the afterburners to score by 1 1/4-lengths in :19.870, posting a 98 speed index.
Bruce and Judy Lunderborg bred and race Jess Rocket Man in the name of Lunderborg LLC. Jason Olmstead trains the gelding, who has won the 2021 North Star State Derby and finished second in the 2020 Gopher State Futurity and 2021 Canterbury Park Derby.
The Lunderborgs bred Jess Rocket Man out of stakes winner Paint Or More. The mare has produced four winners in five starters, including multiple stakes winners PYC Jess Bite Mydust and Dickey Bob. Robert and Julie Petersen’s homebred Western Reserve (Im A Fancy PYC-Western Fun) finished second, the same position she had in last year’s Minnesota Futurity. L.S. Martinez piloted the filly for trainer Edward Hardy. Western Reserve is a three- time winner.
Steven Pribyl’s homebred Furiousity (Furyofthewind-Six It Up) ran third under jockey Jonathan Dominguez for trainer R.A. Hybsha. The filly has won two of her nine starts.

Minnesota Futurity
RELENTLESS COURAGE
by Tracy Gantz
Trainer Jason Olmstead saddled almost half of
the field in the $62,900 Minnesota Futurity at Canterbury Park on Sept. 8. Four of them finished in the first four spots: Relentless Courage, Relentless Babe, The Minnesota Moon, and Bring Back My Vodka.
Tom Maher owns winner Relentless Courage in partnership with Paul Luedemann. Relentless Courage has been perfect in four Canterbury starts, including wins in the MQHRA Stallion Auction Futurity and the North Star State Futurity.
Those victories set him up as the favorite in the 350- yard Minnesota Futurity. Luis Valenzuela has piloted Relentless Courage in all of his Canterbury efforts. They flew to the front when the gate opened and won by 1-length in :17.907, posting a 91 speed index.
Harold Jeanotte bred Relentless Courage out of Newport Lily. She has produced 10 winners in 13 start- ers, including stakes winners Triple Vodka and Hiclass Vodka and stakes-placed Yumyumcomegetyousome.
Edwin Escobedo rode Relentless Babe (Hes Relentless-Mai Corona) to second for Maher and Olmstead. The filly ran second in the North Star State Futurity and third in the MQHRA Stallion Auction Futurity.
Summer Run Inc.’s homebred The Minnesota Moon (Moonin The Eagle-Etta Betta Zoom) finished third under jockey Eugenio Navarrete Jr. The Minnesota Moon was coming off a win in a maiden race.
Completing the field were Bring Back My Vodka (Triple Vodka-Dr Runaway Bride), JJs Full Moon (Moonin The Eagle-Effortlessly Strut), Tomi Guns (BP Phoenix Reign-Bee Bee Guns), Trippin Guns (MN Guns-Trippin’ Tricks TB), Chloes Magic (Hes Relentless-BBs PYC Luckycharm), Holly Jess Is Sweet (One Sweet Jess-Holy White Socks- TB), Silvers Border Queen (Favorite Cartel-Silver Fastbac), and No High Heels (Westover Wildcat TB-Lets Rock This Clock).
Cash Caravan Stakes
DICKEY BOB
by Tracy Gantz
The Cash Caravan Stakes at Canterbury Park has indeed been a cash caravan for Dickey Bob. The gelding has won it three out of the last four years, and in his one loss he finished second by a neck.
Dickey Bob has bettered his time each year. He won the 2018 Cash Caravan by a head in :20.039
for 400 yards. His loss came in 2019, when he ran in :19.741, defeated by PYC Jess Bite Mydust, his full brother. Last year Dickey Bob scored by a head in :19.965. PYC Jess Bite Mydust ran second to Dickey Bob in 2018 and 2020, but wasn’t in this year’s edition.
Bettors sent Dickey Bob off at 1-5 this year. Ridden by Edwin Escobedo, the gelding went right to the front and triumphed by a length in :19.894.
Jason Olmstead trains Dickey Bob, a 10-time stakes winner, for owner-breeder Lunderborg LLC. Lunderborg bred Dickey Bob and PYC Jess Bite Mydust in Minnesota from stakes-winning Paint Or More, who has produced four winners from five starters, including top earner and stakes winner PYC Jess Bite Mydust. Dickey Bob is her third stakes winner.
Myownersbroke (BP Phoenix Reign-Hit The Throtle), bred, owned and trained by Mark Wilson, finished in second for jockey Nik Goodwin. The four-year-old gelding finished third in the 2020 Minnesota Derby.
Fred Pelzer’s homebred Fire N Guns (Freighttrain B-Garters N Guns) finished third
for the second consecutive year. Ray Eikleberry rode the five-year-old gelding for trainer Ralph Haglund. Fire N Guns was coming off a win in the Bob Morehouse Stakes.
Completing the field were Holy Storm (Red Storm Cat-Holy White Socks TB), Jess A Lil Cash (JA Jess Perfect-Dimples Dash O Denim), and Streak N Sparks (Azoom-Streak N Sierra). Living In The Past was scratched.
