                 The 1889 Futurity
MAUDEST MAVEN
by Tracy Gantz
Maudest Maven came into The 1889 Futurity at Canterbury Park on Aug. 25 as a maiden. She had started six times, with her best efforts a second
and a third. She’s still learning her craft, but she demonstrated ability in becoming a stakes winner in her first trip to the winner’s circle.
Edwin Escobedo piloted Maudest Maven for trainer Jason Olmstead. Breaking from post six in the 10-horse field, Maudest Maven drifted to the outside for the first half of the race. Escobedo even- tually got her straightened out, and though she was racing near the outside fence, she got up to win by a neck in :18.209 for 350 yards.
Olmstead trains Maudest Maven for owners/ breeders Butch and Stephanie Webb. The Webbs
bred the filly in South Dakota from three-time stakes winner Madresita. The mare has produced seven winners from nine starters, including stakes winners Luchador and La Reina Madre. Though not a winner, Madresita’s daughter Mami Chula was stakes-placed.
Randal Schwartz’s homebred Runaway Separtely (Seperate Interest-Runaway In Style) finished sec- ond. Eric Snodgrass rode the colt for trainer Mallory Norton. Runaway Separtely earlier ran second in the NDQHRA Futurity.
Tom Maher’s homebred Relentless Dream (Hes Relentless-Valiant Dreams V) ran third under jockey L.S. Martinez and trainer Tyler Stein. The gelding finished third once before in five prior starts.
Completing the field were Deal Me A Jess
(First Down Mr Jess-Eyema Game Dealer), Ima Freighttrain B (Freighttrain B-Marmalades Cartel), Favorite Rambler (Ima Ramblin On-Favorite Dip Chick), Gold Medal Soldier (BV Travelin Soldier- Gold Medal Jano), Mr Wicked Colors (Mr Special Colors-Ragz To Riches), Hastabetickled (Hasta Be Fast-Tickle The Ivorys), and Firstjesstothemoon (First Down Mr Jess-Wave Me To The Moon).
Lip Chip LLC Stakes
SS CLASSYJESS
by Tracy Gantz
SS Classyjess is a moneymaker. Now a five-year- old, the gray mare has earned a total of $389,956. Racing for owner Edgar Rosales, she captured her ninth stakes in the $58,500 Lip Chip LLC Stakes at Lone Star Park on Sept. 25.
Her consistency earned her the 13-10 favorite’s role in the 350-yard Lip Chip Stakes. With regular rider Juan Garcia aboard, she popped out of the two- gate on top and dominated, winning by a 1/2-length in :17.510, posting a 99 speed index.
Jose Carrizales trains SS Classyjess, who was coming off a win in the Gillespie County Fair
Sprint Classic and this year also won the Miss Sam Houston Stakes. Last year SS Classyjess triumphed in the Sam’s Town Stakes, Yellow Rose Of Texas Stakes, Nevill Stakes, Live Oak Stakes, Miss Retama Stakes, and Swift Stakes.
Ronnie Stewart/Double S Farm bred SS Classyjess in Texas out of High Class Broad. The mare has produced four winners from six starters.

Karen Utecht P&A Stakes
SOUTHERNELECTRICAPHA
by Tracy Gantz
When Southern Electric won the $39,500 Karen Utecht Paint & Appaloosa Stakes on Sept.
25, it was special because the Lone Star Park event was named for the late Karen Utecht, the longtime American Paint Horse Association director of racing, who had also worked for Speedhorse.
Southern Electric went off as the 13-10 favorite with Cody Smith aboard. The four-year-old gelding broke in second, was brushed slightly, but came on to score by a neck in :17.606 for 350 yards, posting a 96 speed index.
Ty Blackwell trains Southern Electric for owner/ breeders Dan and Kaye Jones. The 2019 World Champion Solid Paint-Bred Running Horse, Southern Electric has now won nine stakes.
The Jones’ bred Southern Electric in Texas by crossing their Quarter Horse mare Ze Southern Girl with their leading Paint stallion and two-time World Champion CRM Livewire. Ze Southern Girl has produced one other Paint starter and winner and one Quarter Horse runner who is placed.
VP Cold Strong Heart APHA (This Cartel Is Cold QH-Double Dashing Girl), owned by Victor Villarreal, trained by Martin Rodriguez, and ridden by Francisco Giles, finished second. The three-year- old filly had placed in three earlier stakes.
