                 Rock Springs WYO Bred Derby
BLAZIN MR JESS
by Danny Camp
Blazin Mr Jess has won her last three in a row, most recently in the $47,590 Rock Springs Wyoming Bred Derby at Sweetwater Downs on Sept. 25.
The sorrel filly broke from the 5-post and went
wire to wire. Jockey Joe Dominguez let her hit her stride and then started to encourage her. That helped them be a nose in front mid way.
Trained by Riley Moosman, Blazin Mr Jess crossed the line a head winner to complete the 350 yards in :17.532 for a 101 speed index.
The filly also banked the first place check worth $19,036, which ups her total bankroll to $51,445
for owner/breeder Pedro Mena. Her race record now stands at five wins out of eight career starts, includ- ing victories in the KC Carden Wyoming Bred Derby and Powder River Vet Derby.
Pedro Mena bred Blazin Mr Jess out of unraced Blazin Mean. Blazin Mr Jess is her first winner from two starters.
Als Dynasty (Jr Dynasty Mountain-BF Pieces Of April) ran a steady and even race to pocket second place money for owners Kyle Gray and Ron Moosman. The Riley Moosman trainee had Gerardo Vera aboard. The gelding finished second in last year’s Ron Cook Wyoming Bred Futurity.
Bigg Brown (Choctaw River-Purrfect Eve) came in third under Tyson Lusk for owners Kim & Dan Lapierre and trainer Jordan Hadley is in charge of saddling. The gelding won the Rock Springs Derby and was a runner-up in the Rock Springs Futurity.
One Famous Vern (One Fabulous Eagle-Separate Encounter), Makn Diamonds (Maknmoves-Diamonds Tiny Effort), Bodacious Denali (Bodacious Dash- Denali Deception), Pistol Grip (Maknmoves-Eyes In Heaven), Eyesa Special Hatchet (Eyesa Special Slim- Streaking Ruby Red) and VVR Here Comes Bendy (Whata Corona Runner-Fleetwood Mick) completed the order of finish. Dicey Seduction was scratched.
Alberta Bred Derby
HORTONS REAL DEAL
by Danny Camp
Since jockey Ricardo Moreno has taken over the riding assignment, Hortons Real Deal has won his last four races in a row. His latest was in the $31,789 Alberta Bred Derby held at Century Mile on Sept. 18.
The colt came into the finals with the fastest qualifying time from the Sept. 3 trials. In the
finals, he broke from the 4-post, was squeezed from the outside and he was fighting for a place to run. Ricardo had to wait until the colt was in the clear, then they went to work. They were a head in front at the halfway point and crossed the line the same way.
Hortons Read Deal earned an 86 speed index and a first place check worth $14,304, boosting his total earnings to $28,711 for owner/breeder Charles G. Stojan. His race record stands at four wins from eight starts.
Stojan bred Hortons Real Deal out of winner Winkin Dynasty. She has produced one winner from three starters.
Eyesa Timber (First Timber-Eyesa Perry) won his trial heat for the second fastest qualifying time. In the finals, he ran true to form with a second place finish, also running in tight quarters under J. Botello for owner/trainer Wesley T. Oulton.
Yes Im First (First Moonflash-BRT Yes I Can) and jockey Neville Stephenson overcame a bad start to gain enough ground and edge out her rival to finish in third place for owner Ralph E. Danard and trainer Laurie Ferguson.
Bright Foo Fighter (Gone To The Mountain-DJ Bright Sweetheart), Timbers Express (First Timber-Daddys Express Girl), Jagnestimber (First Timber-Gilded Gold), Ulnvme To (First Timber- Ulnvme), Favorite Nickers (Cowboy 109-Cheyenne Mountain), Obsessed Way (Obsessed With Corona- Dash N Way) and Royale Runaway (First Timber- Sparkling Hy) completed the order of finish.
Sgt Pepper Feature Handicap
OTHER WORLD
by Tracy Gantz
Maturity is agreeing with Other World, who
has improved considerably as a three year old over his two-year-old season. He is currently riding a
four-race winning streak that has included victories in the Aug. 1 Jens L. List Jr. Memorial California Breeders Stakes and the 350-yard $25,000 Aug. 28 Sgt Pepper Feature Handicap.
Other World cut it about as close as possible in the Sgt Pepper Feature. Breaking third under jockey Ruben Lozano, he put on a burst of speed late in the 350-yard event, getting up at the very last moment to win by the slimmest of noses in :17.627.
Valentin Zamudio owns and trains Other World, having purchased him privately from breeder Dr. Ed Allred in the middle of four-race win streak. In his final four starts for Allred, Other World ran second twice and won two allowance events.
Allred bred Other World in California from his winning homebred Thoroughbred mare Celestial Being. The mare has produced nine winners from 11 starters, most of them Thoroughbreds. However, her winners also include the stakes-placed Quarter Horse Trial Of Faith.
Johnny Trotter’s homebred Famous Cartel Jess (Mr Jess Perry-Famous Cartel) finished second for jockey Cruz Mendez and trainer Jose Flores. The colt has divided his racing career between Los Alamitos and Ruisodo Downs, placing in the Ruidoso Invitational Stakes on June 12.
Jet Wings One (EC Jet One-Wayward Wings), bred and raced by Dan Moon, ran third. Jose Nicasio rode the filly for trainer Monty Arrossa. Jet Wings One captured the May 23 Adequan Los Alamitos Derby Challenge.
Rounding out the field were Gotta Corona Jess (Apollitical Jess-Gotta Corona Pop), Katella Avenue (Foose-Katie Katella), and Chance It Now (Favorite Cartel-Elans Last).
