Tolltac Handicap
SET FOR IT
by Tracy Gantz
Set For It has experienced plenty of trouble in his races for one so young. After a clean run to win a maiden race in his debut on April 11, he has encountered one difficulty after another. But he prevailed in the $20,000 Tolltac Handicap at Los Alamitos on Sept. 11.
This time when the gate opened, Set For It came out well. He brushed with Seperate Cruises to his inside without letting that stop his momentum. Set For It continued on well to grab the lead and win by a 1/2-length in :17.801 under jockey Ruben Lozano, posting an 87 speed index.
Set For It is owned by Jesus Avila and Jesus Cuevas and Valentin Zamudio trains. The owners purchased Set For It from breeder Dr. Ed Allred for $28,500 at the 2020 Los Alamitos Equine Sale. The gelding has now won three of his five races.
Allred bred Set For It in California from his homebred graded stakes-winning mare Up For It. She has produced five winners from nine starters, including 2021 Governor’s Cup Futurity winner She Goes Up and stakes-placed Up For Speed.
Parsons Ranch’s homebred Seperate Cruises (Seperate Interest-Five Star Cruise TB) finished second. Diego Herrera rode the gelding for trainer Matthew Fales. Seperate Cruises had won two of five previous starts.
Cumbia (Caritas-One Famous Swan), bred and owned by Porfirio Gonzalez, ran third under jockey Erasmo Gasca for trainer John Cooper. The filly had started six times before the Tolltac, winning twice. She was a finalist in the California Breeders Freshman Fillies Stakes.
Cactus Jack (Kiddy Up-Bouquet) and La Blue Amor (Kiddy Up-Amore La Blue) dead-heated for fourth, followed by Up The Ladder (Kiddy Up-Oh La Princess) and Val Frida (Stel Corona-Favorite Strawfly). Vamoosing was scratched.
The Plan Handicap
HOPEFULBLUE
by Tracy Gantz
Hopefulblue has steadily improved all year, to the point that when she did break her maiden, she did it in a stakes race. She captured The Plan
Handicap at Los Alamitos Sept. 4.
Third choice in the field of six, Hopefulblue
broke on top out of the 3-gate for jockey Jonathan Roman. The filly bulleted down the racetrack and remained in front for the entire 350 yards, just lasting by a head to grab the victory. Hopefulblue stopped the timer in :18.101.
Matthew Fales trains Hopefulblue for owner/ breeder Martha Wells and started the filly’s career at Turf Paradise. After two unplaced efforts there, Hopefulblue came to Los Alamitos, running fourth in a trial and then finishing third in the California Breeders Freshman Fillies Stakes.
Roman first rode Hopefulblue in the California Breeders Freshman Fillies. Wells noted that he and the filly “just seemed to click.”
Wells bred Hopefulblue in California from her homebred mare Chics On Fire. Winner of the 2013 California Breeders’ Debutante Stakes, Chics On Fire has produced three winners from four starters.
Zoomin For Trix (Zoomin For Bux-Doing
Trix), bred by the late Jim Walker and owned by the Walker Family Trust, finished second as the odds-on favorite. Ruben Lozano rode the filly for trainer Monty Arrossa. Zoomin For Trix won this year’s Roche Equine Veterinary Services Futurity.
Jockey Cruz Mendez piloted Mister Bigg (Big Daddy Cartel-Sandys Jesse) to third place for trainer Jose Flores and owner Diego Creus. Mister Bigg won one of three races at Turf Paradise prior to The Plan Handicap.
Completing the field were Radar (A Revenant- Snow In My Corona), Fire An Rain (Heat Warning-Watchin The Rain), and CM Blue By You (Duponte-Cool Blue Corona).

PATTYS SAINT
by John Moorehouse
Fortune smiled on Pattys Saint yet again on Sept. 25 at Pocatello Downs, as the filly collected her fifth career stakes victory in the $31,600 Q-Racing
Video Idaho Distaff Challenge.
Trained by Heath Hillman, Pattys Saint broke
second from the 5-post and was in the middle of the pack at first call, then came charging underneath rider Jesus Virgen and led by a 1/2-length going into the stretch. Pattys Saint pulled away to win
by 1-length, finishing the 400 yards in :19.631 and registering a blistering 105 speed index.
Speaking of money, Pattys Saint’s earnings total continues to climb. Owner/breeder Robert Harrison banked a $14,852 prize for this one, boosting the three-year-old filly’s bankroll to $69,011.
Pattys Saint is no stranger to stakes company. Her stakes win total includes last year’s Oneida County Futurity and the WHR Open Futurity at Sweetwater. In 2021, she’s tallied victories in the Blattner Memorial Derby and entered this race coming off a win in the Oneida County Mixed Breed Derby.
Harrison bred Pattys Saint out of SP Saint Patty, a lightly-raced 2012 mare. Pattys Saint is her first winners from two starters.
Two other multiple stakes winners also hit the board. FDD Swingin Dynasty (FDD Dynasty-Jess A Swingin) placed second for Darian Burt. The Scott Warr trainee had Nick Newbold in the irons. Duck Dash N Go (Coronas Fast Dash-Duck Mea Running) finished third for owner Lex Fabrizio and trainer Monty Arrossa. Jesus Canales did the riding.
The remaining order of finish was No One Fights Alone (Jesse James Jr-Bac N The Saddle), Her Apolitical PYC (Apollitical Jess-Her Painted Wagon), Volcums Hot Candy (Volcom-Candy Cartels Cat), RTM Good Enough (Ivory James-RTM Say Your Prayers) and Oh Mi Honey (Turbulent Times-Mi Stoli). Blew Bye You scratched.
