                 OHA Mystery Derby
EARLY SURPRISE
by Danny Camp
It was the Oklahoma Bred three year olds that lined up for the $86,864 Oklahoma Horsemen’s Association Mystery Derby at Will Rogers Downs on Nov. 15.
It wasn’t surprising that the third fastest qualifier Early Surprise took home first place money. After all she has lit the board in every start. She broke from the 9-post and had to fight every stride of the way. At the first call she was in fifth, by the mid-stretch she had managed to get up to third. Jockey Cristian Esqueda supplied plenty of encouragement, and they surged at the end to gain a 1/2-length margin of victory. They stopped the timer at 17.559 to earn a 99 speed index.
Early Surprise earned the $35,246 winner’s share of the purse, which ups her total bankroll to $74,959. Her race record stands at two wins out of seven career starts. She placed second in the Prairie Meadows Gold Derby back in July.
Gail and Michael Ahern own the filly and she
is trained by Stacy Charette-Hill. Homebred in Oklahoma by Gail and Michael Ahern, the bay filly is out of the winning mare Easy Downhill, dam of 100% winners from her five starters.
Apollitical Payoff (Apollitical Jess-Seis The Royal Cash) had the early lead and was able to hold on
for second place under jockey Edwin Escobedo for owner Brenda Reiswig and trainer Jason L Olmstead.
Candy Going Grand (FDD Going Grand-Jess Send Me Candy) finished third under jockey Jorge Torres. She is owned by Renee K. Wilson and trained by Clinton T. Crawford.
The remaining order of finish was Just A Kool Boy (Favorite Cartel-Just Eagle), Waitin On Eight (Valiant Hero-Midnight Sunlight), Lillie Langtry (Apollitical Blood-Martinis N Bikinis), Fabulous Rachel (One Fabulous Eagle-Teller Baja), JK Zipper (Apollitical Jess-Pretty Girl Kate), Rollin Country Girl (Mighty B Valiant-Jess Because I Could), Suzy De Capi (Capo De Capi-Shaken Pappasito).
Don Drake P&A Memorial
RP RECKLESS WIRE
by Danny Camp
RP Reckless Wire had to dig deep to win the $16,800 Don Drake Paint & App Memorial held at Will Rogers Downs on Nov. 15.
Cody Wainscott was in the saddle when RP
Reckless Wire broke on top from the 4-post. She refused to lose. She had the lead at the start and then lost it to JS Runnin Wire, whith whom she dueled throughout. With a gritty performance she crossed the finish line a neck in front with a time of 17.706 that earned a 95 speed index. The $9,918 winner’s share of the purse raised her earnings to $135,990.
Her race record now stands at six wins out
of 18 career starts. This was her third stakes
win, including the PSBA American Paint Classic Derby-G1 earlier this year and the PSBA American Paint Classic Futurity-G1 last year.
Her team includes owner Roy Kent Perkins and trainer Ray A. Enlow. Roy Kent Perkins homebred RP Reckless Wire out of the lightly raced RP Miss Reckess Dash mare. The mare has produced 100% winners from all three starters, with two being stakes winners and one being stakes placed.
JS Runnin Wire (CRM Livewire- Iwilliewantarunner) showed lots of heart to get up for second place for owner Shirley Wheeler and trainer Dee Keener. Gonzalo Gutierrez was in the irons.
The gelding has placed second in his last three outs, previously winning the Masterpiece Derby back in July.
Gitter Dun Fast (Gitter Dun Turnpike-Make No Shadows) gave a big effort to finish third. She is owned and trained by Cosme Quijada. Roman Cruz was handling the reins.
Rounding out the field were La Totuga (CRM Livewire-Goldie Will Make It), Hot Flash (MHM Hotwire-KC Fabulous Flash), Capo Cabana (Capo De Capi-Mai Dashing Hero), Hes A Harley (Hes Relentless-Cash An Flash), The Gladiatrix (Gitter Dun Turnpike-Noumenon).
Opelousas Stakes-RG3
HEZAA FAST BOY
by Danny Camp
Hezaa Fast Boy’s latest stakes victory was the $40,000 Opelousas Stakes hosted by Evangeline Downs on Nov. 5.
Hezaa Fast Boy broke from the 6- post with
regular pilot David Alvarez aboard. They stumbled a little at the break, but Alvarez supplied plenty of hustle and encouragement and by mid race they were a head in front. At the wire they were a neck to the good and stopped the timer in 19.499 for a 98 speed index. The gelding also earned the $24,000 winner’s share of the purse which increased his lifetime earnings to $157,900.
His race record stands at six wins in 16 career starts. Hezaa Fast Boy has won five out of his last seven starts, including the Louisiana Classic Stakes-G2 and the Vals Fortune and Teddy Abrams Jr. Stakes-G2. He also placed second in the Miss Polly Classic Stakes-G2 and third in the Mid City Stakes-G3.
His team includes owner Rogelio Marquez Jr.
and trainer Jesus M. Marquez. Bred in Louisiana
by Simmons Racing, he is out of the graded stakes winning and graded stakes placed mare Brenda Beautiful. She was the AQHA Racing Champion Two- Year-Old Filly in 2008, set a New Track Record at Zia Park, and earned $337,176 during her racing career. She has produced four winners from seven starters.
Five Bar Miracles (Five Bar Cartel-Expect Miracles TB) had the lead very early in the race. She was able
to hang on for a second place finish under jockey J. Ramirez. She is owned and trained by Mark Kendrick.
JJ Heza Fast Dash Jr (Heza Fast Dash-Forever Real) fought the good fight to bank the third place check for his owner J and J Stables LLC and trainer Jose Carrizales. Ricardo Hernandez was handling the reins.
Rounding out the field were Lifeinthefastlanes (Jess Louisiana Blue-Pantherinthefastlane), King Intriguing Blue (Jess Louisiana Blue-Call Me Intriguing), One Sweet Boss (One Sweet Jess-Starlight Bess), Swamp Eagle (Heza Fast Dash-Gee Whit).
