hydrolyzed SMA copolymers in water based applications in leather, pigment and
       ink, and adhesives industries.
         23) Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate (ASA):
ASA is produced by introducing a grafted acrylic ester elastomer during the
copolymerization reaction between styrene and acrylonitrile (SAN). Both ASA and
ABS have similar chemical composition and exhibits similar mechanical properties.
However because of its better UV and weathering resistance ASA is superior to
ABS in wide range of applications. ASA contains an acrylic ester rubber which
imparts good resistance to yellowing and light in comparison to ABS which contains
rubber which is not particularly light and weather resistant.
       Density 1.05 - 1.07 g/ cm 3
       Max continuous Service temperature 70 - 100 °C
ASA is processed by most conventional processing methods.
Drying of resin is recommended: 2-4 hours at 80 - 100°C.
Injection Moulding: A melt temperature of 240-280 °C and mould temperature of
       40-80 °C is recommended.
Extrusion: produce sheets, solid and hollow profiles and pipes at temperature from
       200 to 250°C. A screw with a L/D ratio of from 25 to 30 is recommended.
Blow moulding: parison should be extruded at a melt Temp. of from 220 to 230°C
Thermoforming: Sheets and films made from ASA can be thermoformed.
Recommended forming temperatures are from 140 to 170°C
ASA material are high gloss, great toughness and rigidity, good chemical resistance
and thermal stability, outstanding resistance to weather, aging and yellowing and
high impact strength, even at low temperatures. Exhibits excellent UV and stress
       crack resistance.
ASA is available in natural, off white and a range of standard and custom-matched
colours and also mixed with other polymers to make alloys and compounds.
ASA can be solvent welded using 2-butanone, dichloroethylene, or cyclohexane, it
readily accept and retain print and coatings without prior surface treatment and be
       Vacuum metallized.
Strengths: Outstanding outdoor weatherability, Good heat resistance up to 100°C,
good colourability, UV Stability, chemical resistance, outdoor applications.
Limitations: Attacked by concentrated acids, aromatic and chlorinated
hydrocarbons, esters, ethers and ketones, toxic smoke generation when burned,
less compatible with polyolefins, polystyrenes and nylons, moulding gives rise to
       product of poor strength.
Applications: Lawn-mower components, garden-hose reels, snowmobile
housings, machinery covers and covers for outdoor lighting, automotive parts like
Radiator, exterior mirror and lamp housings, grilles, drip rails, and bumper covers,
outdoor furniture, windsurfer boards, swimming pool pumps, boat hulls, cable
connection housings, weatherproof protective housings for satellite electronics, ,
in Sports, Sailboat parts, Golf trolley , ski box, washing machine and , microwaves
panels, refrigerator handles, Sewing machines, kitchen appliances.
