Mangrove Ecotourism
in Wonorejo, Surabaya
The city of Surabaya has an interesting tourist spot in Wonorejo, called Mangrove Ecotourism or Mangrove
Forest. This Mangrove area is the number one favorite tourist spot for outdoor tourism/adventures. Located
in Wonorejo village, Rungkut subdistrict, precisely located at Jalan Raya Wonorejo Timur Number 1,
Wonorejo, Rungkut, Surabaya, this forest offers a fantastic venue for anyone wishing for some peace and
quiet and to enjoy beautiful natural sceneries. The air feels very cool and far from city pollution. There are
many interesting photo spots in the area such as bird's nest spots, viewing tower spots, bamboo dock spots,
and many more.
The location of city of Surabaya on the east coast of Java Island, has several mangrove areas scattered in north
and east. Wonorejo, Rungkut subdistrict is one of the most developed mangrove ecosystems in Surabaya.
Wonorejo mangrove area is one of the mangrove ecosystems in Surabaya initiated by public awareness which
then developed into an area of conservation, education, rehabilitation, and ecotourism which carries the
concept of tourism with the main vegetation in the form of mangrove trees or commonly known as mangrove
forests.
Ecotourism is an activity that utilizes natural resources in the form of tourism aiming for education, research,
conservation, and society economic improvement. Lately, ecotourism is a type of tourism that attracts high
interest, especially Surabaya which has a large population and limited nature tourism.
Mangrove forest is collection of shrub and trees species that live along shores, rivers, and estuaries in the
tropics and subtropics. Mangroves are remarkably tough. They grow, survive, and thrive in brackish water
and salt water. Most live on muddy soil, but some also grow on sand, peat, and coral rock. They live in water
up to 100 times saltier than most other plants can tolerate.
In general, the mangrove forest provides many benefits. Mangroves are important to people because they help
stabilize the coastline, reducing erosion from storm surges, currents, waves, and tides. The intricate root
