DOCTOR PROFILE
D OCTOR KEVIN BORCHARD HAS BEEN SURROUNDED BY MEDICINE from
childhood. His mother was the ambulance service director in Meeker
for over 20 years, starting in 1986, and Dr. Borchard and his siblings were
‘recruited’ into the EMT service at her request. “Even as kids, we were
often times the guinea pigs in the practical exams she gave to her students.”
Dr. Borchard recalls. “It seemed like every year, a couple times a year, we were
dressed up with fake wounds for the EMTs to train.”
In senior high school, that medical influence continued through a mentor,
Dr. David Steinman. Dr. Steinman was a family practice doctor in Meeker, and Dr.
Borchard’s experience with him throughout school is what clinched the decision
for him to go to medicine, and more than that, his desire to practice medicine in
a small town.
Instead of going directly into a traditional medical school, Dr. Borchard
decided to join the Air Force, in a program called the Health Professions
Scholarship Program. He was commissioned as an officer in the first year of
medical school and did a five-year residency with the Air Force in San Antonio.
After graduation, he went on active duty for four years.
During active duty, he was stationed first in Italy, and then in Colorado
Springs, and was eventually deployed to Afghanistan.
