Carcass Classification
Suggestions for the amendment of the regulations of the AGRICULTURAL
PRODUCT STANDARDS ACT, 1990 (ACT No. 119 OF 1990) have been supplied
to Mr Rudi van der Westhuizen of SAMIC for submission to the Department of
Agriculture.
Livelihood of Rural Pig Farmers in Western Cape
Melissa Cupido’s project at the University of Stellenbosch, Improving the
livelihood of pig farmers of commages in rural areas of Western Cape, is being
funded and is running. No further progress reports have been received so far
and it is suspected that the project was delayed by the Covid-19 lockdown.
African Swine Fever
Dr Juanita van Heerden of the ARC-OVI at Onderstepoort is being partially
funded for a project titled: ”The Risk of African Swine Fever to Gauteng”. An
interim progress report was recently received.
Antimicrobial Resistance
Dr Mokoele of the Veterinary faculty at Onderstepoort receives partial funding
of a PhD project on “The prevalence, perceptions and mitigation of
antimicrobial resistance in pig farms of Gauteng province and surroundings in
South Africa”. A progress report is awaited.
Bursaries
A bursary was awarded to Ms Chantel Pennicott who will be doing a study at
Baynesfield under supervision of Prof Rob Gous. Her study is titled Economic
optimum nutrition of growing pigs at Baynesfield. No progress has been
reported yet.
Reports
SAPPO paid the publication fees for an article by Dr Leana Janse van
Rensburg et al. titled “Investigation of African Swine Fever outbreaks in pigs
outside the controlled areas of South Africa, 2012-2017” in the Journal of the
South African Veterinary Association. A popular article was published in turn
in PORCUS titled “Occurrence of African swine fever in domestic pigs in South
Africa”.
