ENGLISH 10
Level: IV- Honors Credits: 05
This course has a world and multicultural approach to the study of world literature, which will expand
the student’s proficiency in skills as well as depth of knowledge. It includes considerably more reading, writing
and speaking than required in other 10th grade English classes. The objectives of this course are to further
develop effective writing skills as demonstrated in multi-paragraph composition, and to further develop
advanced critical reading and thinking skills, and increase the development of oral communication skills.
Training in research techniques and the preparation of research papers is provided. Summer Reading is
required. Students will be able to understand how to express themselves clearly and effectively.
Pre-requisite: A grade of 85 in English 9 - Honors or a grade of 90 in English 9.
Level: III – Advanced Credits: 05
This course has a world and multicultural approach to the study of world literature. It is designed for
self-motivated students and offers an enriched curriculum in reading and writing. Instruction will enable
students to focus on expanding and refining expository writing and literary analysis and application of listening,
speaking and writing skills previously learned. Students will also be required to do more outside reading and
more outside class preparation and study. Classroom work and assessments will be driven by the ELA Common
Core State Standards. Additional skill areas will include library research, study and organizational skills,
listening, speaking and critical thinking. Activities in literature will include introductory study of literary forms
including short story, poetry, essay, drama and the novel. Summer reading is required.
Level: II – College Preparatory Credits: 05
This course has a world and multicultural approach to the study of world literature. Students will apply
their knowledge of word origins to determine the meaning of new words encountered in reading materials and
use those words accurately. Classroom instruction will help students improve their skills in spelling, vocabulary,
grammar and mechanics in writing compositions, and interpreting literature. Novel units will include diversified
activities to allow students a variety of strategies for learning the lesson objectives. Activities will include the
application of literary comprehension, writing, critical thinking, and vocabulary skills. Students will use
technology to improve their proficiency of the academic standards for Language Arts Literacy. Classroom work
and assessments will be driven by the ELA Common Core State Standards and guided by the teacher. Summer
reading is required.
ENGLISH 11
Level: IV- Honors Credits: 05
This course will center on the study of major writers and genres of American literature. The students will
concentrate on critical analysis of literature and responding to the literature in standard critical form.
Intensive vocabulary work will be included in the course. Grammar will be studied in conjunction with
composition and research skills. Writing activities will concentrate on the writing of full length compositions
which develop a thesis statement. Various reports and research papers, as well as SAT and State/National
Standardized Test preparation activities, are required coursework.
