SUMMER READING LIST

In order to improve the reading levels and skills of students, it is important to keep them reading. We need
to stress reading for both information and pleasure. One way to support the improvement of reading skills is to
encourage students to read all the time. This means that students need to read during the summer months as well
as when school is in session. A required summer reading program sends the message that the district believes that
reading is a key component for student achievement. The program is designed in such a way as to not only
encourage reading but also to have the students enjoy the experience so they may become life-long readers.

Students will be required to read one book which will be provided by the district. Upon reviewing the reading
list, it should be noted that students will have a choice between two books which are appropriate to the grade and
level of the English in which they are enrolled and approved by the Board of Education. In addition, a brief
synopsis of each book has been provided.

Students will be required to complete summer reading. All students will be assessed on the reading list
when they return to school in the fall. The results will be averaged into the first marking period grade as
        a test score.

The Summer Reading List can be found on the District’s Web Page (www.pinehillschools.org). Parents
have the right to request alternative reading for any selections they find inappropriate.

        ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS (ELL)

Introduction: Overbrook High School has an ELL program designed to assist students in acquiring both social
and academic language skills. Additionally, these courses will help assimilate students into a new culture.

        ELL I - IV
        Level: II Credits: 05
These progressive level based courses are for students who have been identified as having a native
language other than English. A process for identifying these students is initiated by utilizing multiple measures
including entrance examinations. English Language Learners (ELL) will be enrolled in this course based on
English proficiency level. Student will be evaluated yearly using a state approved exam which will help determine
placement. Students will continue in this program until they meet all exit criteria using multiple measures. This
course may count as a world language requirement.
