Level: II- College Preparatory Credits: 05
Students will complete lessons related to literature units emphasizing British authors. Activities will
include the application of literary comprehension, writing, critical thinking, and vocabulary skills. Students will
use technology to improve their proficiency of the academic standards for English Language Arts. Novel units
will include diversified activities to allow students a variety of strategies for learning the lesson objectives. This
course reinforces and extends previously learned skills through instruction centered on British literature. This
course also builds efficiency in reading, spelling, vocabulary, basic sentence structure, punctuation, and study
skills. It is also designed to improve composition skills with an emphasis on writing essays with attention to
principles of effective exposition and mechanics.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT LANGUAGE AND COMPOSITION
Level: V - AP Credits: 05
Students may take this course in lieu of English 11. This Advanced Placement Course is an accelerated program
designed to expose the superior student to college level studies. This course will strengthen the effectiveness of
the students writing through close reading and frequent practice at applying rhetorical strategies, analyzing
information from source texts, and writing arguments. Students will become critical readers of predominantly
nonfiction works, including expository, argumentative, analytical, and personal texts from various authors and
time period as a preparation for taking the Advanced Placement Examination in English Language and
Composition, devised and supplied by the College Board.
Pre-requisite: A grade of 85 in English 10 – Honors or a grade of 90 in English 10.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT LITERATURE AND COMPOSITION
Level: V - AP Credits: 05
Students may take this course in lieu of English 12. This Advanced Placement course is an accelerated
program designed to expose the superior student to college level studies. By examining works from British and
World Literature, students will be involved in the study and practice of writing and the study of literature. The
students will read and critique several representative works from various genres and periods. The students will
write assorted essays and complete sample tests as a preparation for taking the Advanced Placement Examination
in English Literature and Composition, devised and supplied by the College Board®.
Pre-requisite: A grade of 85 in English11 - Honors or a grade of 90 in English 11.
SPEECH AND PUBLIC SPEAKING
Level: III- Advanced Credits: 05
This course provides instruction and experience in preparation and delivery of speeches within a public
setting and group discussion. Emphasis is on research, preparation, delivery and evaluation of informative,
persuasive, and special occasion public speaking. Upon completion, students should be able to prepare and deliver
well-organized speeches and participate in group discussion with appropriate audiovisual support. Students also
demonstrate the speaking, listening, and interpersonal skills necessary to be effective communicators in academic
settings, in the workplace, and in the community.
