Course Selection/Changes
Changes in courses, once the school year is underway, are much more difficult to make due to class size,
restrictions in the master schedule and conflicts with other courses. The student should not choose courses on a
"trial" basis. The student and parents/guardians should make course selection very thoughtfully and carefully. As
you move towards senior year, realize that you may not be able to receive all of your choices of electives since
there are a greater number of choices in junior and senior year. Students should be prepared to prioritize their
electives and understand that one or more choices may be precluded due to limitations of: teacher availability,
room availability, enrollment numbers, master schedule conflicts, and core classes required for graduation.
Course selections are reviewed in the Spring of the previous school year. Changes to course selection must be
made during the Spring Review period. Once the school year begins, changes to class schedules will be limited
to academic level changes only. Prior to removing a course or changing level of the same course, the following
parameters must be met:
1. Student must complete all classwork and homework.
2. Absences must be no more than 25% of the allowed cap (special consideration will be given
for serious health issues or family emergencies).
3. Student must be making a concerted effort to pass the class.
If the aforementioned considerations are being met, the student, parent/guardian, teacher, school counselor and
principal (or principal’s designee) will meet to discuss the request. The principal or designee will make the
decision following the meeting. After the specified time frame, students who drop a course may receive a
designation of withdraw failing/withdraw passing on their transcript.
