1) Medigap Plan G. This is the most comprehensive Medigap plan available to you. It
covers all of Medicare’s gaps except for the Part B deductible, which will be $203 in
2021 (this year it’s $198). So, after you’ve paid this annual deductible, you won’t have
any co-payments for Medicare-covered medical services during the year. You should be
able to get Plan G for about $2,800 a year (about $235 a month) or less.

                   2) Medigap Plan N. This plan is slightly less comprehensive than Plan G, but it still provides
solid coverage. Its gaps include the $203 Part B deductible, co-pays of up to $20 for
doctor’s office visits, and a $50 co-pay for emergency room visits. Annual premiums are
roughly 20% lower than Plan G’s, and you would probably save money in this plan
compared to Plan G unless you go to your doctors fairly often. Annual premiums for
                       Plan N are about $$2,350.

                   3) Medigap Plan L. This is the least comprehensive of the plans compared in your
evaluation, and it has co-insurance payments for most Medicare-covered services. Its
best feature is its $2,940 out-of-pocket limit, although that limit does not include the
plan’s premiums or the costs of services that the plan doesn’t cover, e.g., the Part B
deductible. Annual premiums are about the same of those of Plan N. Only five insurance
companies sell Plan L in Florida.

               Discounts

Insurance companies that sell Medigap policies sometimes offer discounts. A few companies,
for example, offer small discounts for automatic debit payments or for paying a year’s
               premiums in advance.

Some companies offer household discounts if both spouses get a Medigap policy. These
discounts can range between 3% and 12%, and it’s possible that when your wife turns 65 in
May, the two of you might get the lowest combined premiums by utilizing the household
discounts, although not all companies offer them.

Your six-month guaranteed issue period goes through May, and so if you can save money by
taking advantage of the household discounts, you should be able to switch to a different insurer
without answering questions about your health. The CSG Actuarial premiums indicate which
companies offer household discounts as well as the discount percentages, but the premiums
shown do not include the discounts.
