of race”, it is important to understand how this

transformation occurred. First, let’s consider who led
            this transformation.

The Progressive Alliance – As we discussed in Chapter 3,
many of the leaders who marched with Dr. King were

elected to Congress, not as Republicans, but as
Democrats. As we discussed above, this loyalty resulted

from the unflinching support that Democratic President
John Kennedy and his brother, Attorney General Robert
Kennedy, gave to assist and protect the Civil Rights

            movement during the late 1950s-60s.

Once elected, these leaders united to form the
Congressional Black Caucus. This Caucus soon formed

strong alliances with the Progressive Wing of the
Democratic Party. Together, these two constituents
quickly became a powerful alliance with a voice that

could not be ignored in the halls of congress. In
addition, they soon enjoined the staunch loyalty of a

third very essential member, the mainstream media.
This threesome became a formidable alliance with

powers that virtually cannot be challenged or checked.
For discussion purposes, we will refer to this three-part

            alliance as the “Progressive Alliance”.

Within a decade, this Progressive Alliance masterminded

and achieved the most stunning political transformation
