A Word about Science

Before we turn our attention to the definitions of race, a
word regarding science and its various permutations is in
order. This is relevant because today’s popular culture

places a high premium on science as an indisputable
treasury of knowledge. Understanding what we will

term as the classifications or categories of science will
encourage a greater intellectual honesty in how we

treat, think, and speak of the concept of race.

While the remainder of this chapter may read a bit

academic, it is a necessary building block in this section.

Science in Two Categories
In a general sense, and for the purposes of this text,

there are two classifications of science. These classes
are a Pure Science, and a Pure and Applied Science. A

Pure Science discipline is any methodical quest with the
immediate intent to obtain and increase knowledge

regarding a particular subject matter, entity, or event,
without the attendant rigor necessary to develop

practical applications of that knowledge. For the pure
science practitioner, the use of the acquired knowledge
to life and society is not a matter of professional duty.

A Pure and Applied Science discipline is any methodical

quest or study with the immediate intent to obtain or
