increase knowledge regarding a particular subject

matter, entity, or event with the attendant rigor to
develop methods, means, and procedures to apply that
knowledge to life and society. Contrary to the pure

science practitioner, the pure and applied scientists
include as a part of their professional duty - the useful

application of the acquired knowledge to life, the world,
            and societal problems.

The concept of race is addressed in both classifications
of science, primarily in the disciplines of sociology and

biology. There is a third category or discipline which
may also be considered a type of science. That category

is theology. However, the theological or Biblical
definition of race will be addressed in the next chapter.

Before we define race, it is necessary to define
sociology, biology, and theology within their respective

            classifications.

            Sociology
Sociology is a pure science. It and other similar

disciplines (examples, psychology and political science)
are sometimes referred to as a “basic,” “social,” or a
“bastard” science. It is based on “bastard” conjectures

that are part science, part theoretical, part practical, and
part art. It is the study of social life, social change and

social causes and consequences of human behavior.
