HUMAN BLOOD COMPOSITION AND FUNCTIONS

                         Blood composition
Blood composition consist Plasma, Buffy Coat, Erythrocytes (figure 14).
Blood is the connective tissue in which the liquid intercellular substance is most
pronounced. The intercellular substance of blood is called plasma. It contains various
molecules and ions, which make up 10% of the plasma volume, the rest is water. Plasma
contains the most proteins – about 7%.

                         Figure 14. Blood composition

In addition to plasma, blood consists of shaped elements – cells (erythrocytes
and various types of leukocytes) and derivatives of cells (platelets). Shaped elements
account for about 40-45% of the blood volume, plasma is 55-60% of the blood volume.
                  Blood Plasma
Plasma is the liquid component of human blood and makes up about 55 percent
of blood by volume. It is about 92 percent water and contains many dissolved
substances. Most of these substances are proteins, but plasma also contains trace
amounts of glucose, mineral ions, hormones, carbon dioxide, and other substances.

                  Formed Elements
The formed elements (figure 15) in the blood include red blood cells, white blood
cells, and platelets. These different types of elements are pictured in picture and
described in the sections that follow.
