The tympanic cavity is connected to the nasopharynx through the Eustachian
tube (auditory tube). This is necessary to equalize the pressure on both sides of the
eardrum with changes in atmospheric pressure.
Inner Ear (figure 37).
The inner ear is located in the pyramid of the temporal bone.
Here is the cochlea, which is the organ of hearing, and the vestibular system,
which is the organ of balance and acceleration. The receptors of the vestibular apparatus
are located on the cristae of the semicircular channels.
The whole system of cavities and convoluted tubules is called a labyrinth. There
are bony and membranous labyrinths. The latter is immersed in the bone labyrinth of
the rocky part of the temporal bone. The membranous labyrinth consists of a vestibule,
a snail and semicircular channels.
