The tactile discs respond to faint vibrations and a deep motionless touch. Because
of the small perceptual field, detailed information is given. They are not coated and
therefore react to pressure for a long time. There are a lot of them on the palms and
fingertips.
In addition, Merkel cells perform a neuroendocrine function.
Ruffini corpuscles, or bulbous corpuscles (figure 44), are encapsulated sensitive
nerve endings of an elongated shape, activated by stretching the skin. This type of
mechanoreceptors is localized in the deeper layers of the dermis.

The Pacini corpuscle, or lamellar corpuscle (figure 45), is an encapsulated
mechanoreceptor formed by processes of epithelial cells that come into contact with
glial cells of the nerve process.
