Debate
The 2009-2010 debate season was a big success for the Carrollton
team. Senior Helen Gomez and Junior Anna Dimitrijevic earned six
bids to the Tournament of Champions; and appeared in elimination
debates in Washington D.C., Texas, Illinois, Michigan, Kentucky and
Tennessee. The two capped their season by placing 3rd overall in the
National Championship - Carrollton's best performance ever. Gomez
was named 6th speaker overall and, for the first time in thirty-two years
a woman, Junior Dimitrejevic, was named the nation's top speaker.
Not to be outdone, Carrollton's younger debaters earned awards
as well. Carrollton closed out the Semi-finals in their only in-state
competition, by placing 1st through 5th place at the Crestian Classic.
Valeria Villa and Fabiola Urdaneta won nine out of ten ballots at the St.
Marks Sophomore Hoedown, and Freshman Mary Grace Darmody and
Francis Swanson won first place at the Colleyville Heritage tournament
in Texas. Graduating Seniors Lauren Sisak, Camilla Hernandez and
Helen Gomez are now moving on to debate at Wake Forest University,
Dartmouth College and Northwestern in the fall.
