Listening to our Haitian hosts, I wondered how they could be so hopeful. When I asked one of them, she looked at
me and with such sincerity said, "I believe we and Haiti will rise up from this because I have faith." - Sister Cooke
following her February 5th trip to Haiti.
Haiti has experienced devastating disasters over the past decade. The most catastrophic was the 7.0-magnitude
earthquake that struck on January 12, 2010. People from all across the world were moved to action. At Carrollton,
prayer vigils were held and the community responded generously, beginning with a call for donations from Sister
Cooke. This was followed by various student-generated fundraising initiatives campus-wide that not only raised
money, but reminded everyone not to forget that our commitment to Haiti must continue long after news coverage
and telethons have dwindled. Carrollton continues its work with the Religious of the Sacred Heart in Haiti; Amor en
Accion and Paul Farmer, MD and Partners in Health. It is with Dr. Farmer and PIH that we are committed to helping
build a school in the spirit of Sacred Heart Education. - Chloe Burke '10
