Being informed about less fortunate
people around us can not only help us
become more thankful, but also closer to
Cod. After looking at people who are so
grateful to receive something as simple as
a volunteer's time, it becomes easier to
see how lucky we really are. Community
service is a great way to deepen our
relationship with God because it is a joy
shared between all involved and puts
God's gifts in true perspective. Just giving
something as simple as our time can seem
insignificant, but in the long-run, it can
change people's lives, even our own.
While volunteering can be fun a lot
of times, sometimes it is hard work. I
experienced this personally on service
day. I had been anxious to play with the
children and have a good time at the
school for children at risk, but instead,
I ended up organizing a storage closet.
Everything was dusty and messy and at
first it seemed as if it would be impossible
to organize. The process of cleaning the
closet with friends was more fun than I
had imagined it would be; it was a lot of work, but the final product was
definitely worth it. Not only was the closet very neat and organized - a
huge improvement of its original messy state - but when the teachers of
the school came to see the result of our hard work, they were so grateful
that their supplies were more accessible and organized. Community
service is a great way to affect a lot of people (including ourselves).
