C h allenge
H igh School
Dr. Busse and his students began the High School's participation in the 2009-2010 Fairchild Challenge with songs
they composed about the Everglades. Gabriela Marcos, Victoria Ulvert, Maria Moni, Susanna Jimenez, Rebeca
Jimenez, Nastassja Schmiedt, Carolina Barreto and Sofia Daccarett-Char received Honorable Mentions for their
performance of their original song, "Miccosukee Swamp Rock." Art students under the direction of Ms. Snyder
designed CD covers for a London-based band, Storey, for which Sophomore Christine Nunez received Honorable
Mention. Juniors and Seniors wrote research papers in Ms. Lindeman's and Mrs. Banciella's classes. Annasofia
Roig-Novo wrote a paper on biomimicry, Alexandra Perez wrote a riveting film review of "The Story of Stuff,"
and Lia Nies received Honorable Mention for her paper on recycling. In January, debaters under the tutelage of
Ms. Randall received a perfect score for their participation in environmental debates. Ms. Wiesen's art students
made watercolors of local edible plants. Ana Zelaya received First Place for her Sea Grape Tree and Stefani Rey
received Honorable Mention for her Papaya Watercolor. Photography students in Mr. Linares' class created original
photo essays exploring the theme of edible plants. The works of Lillian Loy and Gabriela Granda were selected for
submission to Fairchild.
