Responding in the
Moment Answers
1. The four elements of a Coaching Conversation are: Introduce,
Listen, Share your concern, invite to problem solve.
2. When introducing a concern, keep in mind that you need to keep the
person’s executive Function Skills working at their best. This means making
sure the other person does not feel blamed or become defensive. Phrases
such as “Don’t worry, you are not in trouble. I’m on your side. I want to
support you.”
3. It should always be the youngest person who introduces their concern first.
4. The adult should try to provide empathetic listening. This means responding
with compassion and showing you understand the other person’s
experience. You may want to paraphrase what the child has said too.
5. If the child responds with ‘dunno’, it is best to reply with “Oh, ok. So you’re
not sure. Don’t worry. Have another think about it ..” then repeat the
question in a different way.
