Clinical neurodiversity: Autism
Autism is a lifelong developmental disability which affects how people
communicate and interact with the world. It impacts approximately
2% of all adults.
Autistic people often have heightened senses,
meaning the world can feel overwhelming.
Common autism traits include:
❖ problems with social interaction
❖ unusual interest in objects
❖ need for sameness
❖ great variation in abilities
❖ repeated actions or body movements
❖ unusual emotional reactions and expressions
❖ under/over reaction to one or more of the five senses:
sight, hearing, smell, touch, taste
