Engineers (bless them) see the brain in a slightly different way and represent its processes
as shown in Figure 3.3.
The engineering representation is important because it shows the connection between a
sensory input and the resulting action, passing through a number of conscious filters. As we
will discover later, when a person is being deceptive, some of these filters break down.
The different areas of the brain are related through a web of more than a 100 trillion (again
just think how many this is) neural connections, which receive and send a complex array of
neurotransmitters for even simple tasks.
Darwin made a Freudian slip: what he meant to say was ‘survival of the fattest’
Hemispheres of the brain
Divisions
The human brain is divided into two hemispheres each with the same component parts (ex-
cept for the old pineal gland):
The left hemisphere is concerned with:
• logic and analysis and is conscious of time;
• verbal communication and words;
• control, linear, serial and sequential thinking;
• movements and sensory input on the right side of the body;
• dissection and separation of thoughts;
• autonomic control of the right side of the body.
