Corruption of Bribery
Chapter 6 : Corruption in the “Carbon World”
The cost (independently estimated at around 4% to 6% of GNP and the loss of up to a
million jobs) at a time when Western economies are struggling to survive
The impact of pouring millions if not trillions of pounds – effectively concealed overseas
aid – into corrupt countries primarily for the benefit of kleptocrats
The impact of hare‐brained offset projects on local citizens (see page Uganda xx) and
food supply caused by the quest for biofuels which, in turn, could result in massive food
shortages
Under EU Sustainability Standards biofuels reduce emissions by at least 35%. But a recent study shows that
palm oil increases emissions by 31% because of the carbon released when forests and grasslands are turned into
plantations. In 2009 an estimated 127,000,000 million litres of palm oil was added to diesel sold to motorists in
Britain
The Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation requires that 3.25% of all fuel sold should come from crops, increasing
to 13% by 2020. The EU has conducted its own research into the impact this target (subsidised to the tune of £3
billion a year) will have on the food chain but refuses to publish the results.
The most damaging consequence for the UK is the looming power crisis:
In 2016 35% of our coal fired station capacity has to be shut down to comply with yet
another EU directive
Before 2020 power costs for companies and families in the UK could double
Thus sometime before 2020, the UK will be much more dependent on Russian gas with critical
security implications. There will also be a shortage of food, or of limited availability and too
expensive to ship to the nations that need it.
The UK government’s plans for a “smart grid” are designed for power rationing when supplies can be turned off at
the individual household level. It is “Big Brother” deja vu
7.7 The Bottom Line
If the “Carbon World” were a company it would fail every conceivable compliance standard.
Figure 6.6 sets out a best estimate of how it compares to a typical financial institution prior to the
2007‐2009 collapse.
