There are three climatological centres on which the IPCC principally relies (and from which
many of its lead authors, authors and reviewers are drawn).

with the Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research . UEA’s high profile
members include Professor Philip Jones and Keith Briffa: of which more later (HADCRU

 NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies represented by the not publicity shy James

 Pennsylvania State University represented by Michael Mann

Other climatological and research centres are also influential

 The National Climatic Data Centre (NCDC) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA) that produces the Global Historical Climate Network (GHCN) data
base of international measuring stations. The NCDC takes a much lower profile than UEA
and GISS but its records are used extensively by both and are publicly available
 University of Alabama at Huntsville (UAH) with Dr John Christy, Roy Goddard and Roy
Spencer (GCRP/CCPS)
 Remote Sensing Systems is a sophisticated research business, established in 1974, based
in Santa Rosa, California whose specialist equipment is loaded onto NASA satellites

To a lesser or greater extent, all of the above bodies collect raw temperature data, homogenise
it, feed it through models to predict trends and provide reports. They are funded mainly by
government agencies.

On the other side of the global warming argument is an array of dissenting governmental
scientists, academics, climatologists and independents. The majority receive no government
funding but are vilified by believers for being in the pay of the big oil companies who supposedly
oppose all legislation that could limit their profits.
