Chapter 6 : Corruption in the “Carbon World”

The Medieval Warm Period has, all of a sudden, vanished
This illustration eliminated the Medieval Warm Period as well as the temperature rises in the
1930s and 1940s. Suppression of these pesky problems was achieved by remodelling some of the
historical proxy tree ring data and then merging them on a continuous line with land temperature
records from 1960 onwards. This ploy was later referred to as “Mike’s nature trick” and copied by
Professor Philip Jones in another context.
It should also be noted that tree ring proxy temperatures from 1960 onwards were significantly
below those recorded by thermometers. Common sense would suggest that if proxies were
currently recording lower temperatures than thermometers, the historical record based upon
them should be adjusted UPWARDS which would have the effect of disproving temperature
rises: but this did not happen. The two sets of data were joined together in a continuous line to
show an upward trend.
The "hockey stick" was immediately seized upon by the US environmental movement as
compelling evidence of global warming. It was however totally rejected by two Congressional
Committees who found the work "fundamentally flawed" with one senior American scientist
later describing it as "one of the most comprehensively discredited artefacts in the history of
science"
