Babies can be born at any time of the
year. A baby weighs 250 pounds when it is
born. It stands up 15 minutes after it’s born.
The herd moves slowly for the first few
days.
The young one walks between its
mother and another female. If it gets tired,
they hold it up with their trunks. By the
third day, the baby can keep up with the
herd. At first the little one doesn’t know
how to use its trunk. Sometimes it steps on
it. Sometimes it even sucks its trunk like a
human baby suck its thumb.
