Page 14 PHOENIX February 14.1974LETTER TO THE EDITORContinued from Page 7contract I%u2019ve received from thepolice was an inquiry as to whereBoerum Hill is%u2014what are ourboundaries. This leads me tobelieve that the officers doing thestudy do not have in theirpossession the material and mapsmade available to them in the fall.4. Simple things are at issue: Abetter chance to prevent crime;improved capabilities-to react to itwhen committed; a better chancefor the police to improve itsrelations with a community and forthe community to better understand the problems of thepolice.5. And the solution we seek is notcom plicated%u2014the moving ofexisting police precinct boundariesonly a very few blocks. If thecommunity is denied this rathersimple request, the measure oftheir confusion and wrath when thehigh-crime season bursts upon usin the summer will be significantlyhigher than last year.It need not be.Very truly yours,Dennis HoltPresidentBoerum Hill AssociationBellamy ConcursA copy of the following letter wassent to the PHOENIX forpublication here:Commissioner Michael J. CoddPolice HeadquartersDear Commissioner Codd:I most strongly urge you toreconsider your decision againstplacing the community known asBoerum Hill in Brooklyn under thejurisdiction of one police precinct. As you are quite well aware, thecommunity is presently spread outover three precincts, where instead of receiving much coverage,it is for the most part forgotten byeach of these three precincts. Myimpression is that you have givenvery little consideration to thisissue, which, in fact, has thesupport of not only the Boerum HillCommunity, but surroundingBrooklyn communities as well.Again, I urge you to review thisdecision.Sincerely,Carol BellamyState SenatorPesce Also A greesA copy of the following letter wassent to the PHOENIX forpublication here:Michael CoddPolice CommissionerDear Commissioner Codd:I am writing to express myconcern over your decision not toinclude the Boerum Hill Community in one police precinct.Having discussed this matter withsome of the residents involved, Imust strongly urge you to reconsider.Former Commissioner Cawley,in response to this request, indicated that he would have thematter completely investigated. To date, the community has notreceived the results of this investigation. Your reasons, as givento Councilman Richmond arecertainly not valid when one takesinto account that what we areconcerned about is the safety ofpeople d iiu th e p i e a ti v d L iu n o f o u i communities. As you begin your new assignment with the Police Department, please bear in mind that in manyareas, Police-Community relationsare not at their best. Your attitudein this matter will only allienate acommunity which wants to have aclose working relationship withtheir police.I ask that you again take thisunder advisement and would bemost happy to discuss this matterwith you.Sincerely,Michael L. You have seen fit to denythis to them. You have created anatmosphere which breeds truancy! And then you punish them furtherby removing teachers because ofthe school%u2019s high truancy rate.Where is the justice?Instead of removing onlyteachers, do something constructive about the truants.Parents complain to me that theydo not discover their child%u2019struancy except by accident. Thisshocks a parent two ways: (1) whydid the child play hookey and (2)where were they during this time? Our school states they have notreceived their mail allotment soare unable to send out cards. Pescehas announced that the StateLegislature has repealed a 2 V2percent income tax surchargewhich has been in effect since 1972.%u201cI am very pleased that the incometax surcharge has been eliminatedfor two reasons. First, I feel that itwas a regressive tax which had adisproportionate effect on bothlower and middle income taxpayers. And, second, thelegislation bears a strikingresemblance to a bill I introducedduring the 1973 session which wasdenied consideration because I ama member of the Democraticminority.%u201dAssemblyman Michael L. Pescehas written a letter to Federalenergy chief William Simonrequesting Federal legislation andor regulation with reference toindependent oil retailers.%u201cOil distributed by independentretailers to small home-owners inmy district is still done at a muchhigher price than oil distributed bythe major companies. The pricedifferentials run anywhere from 8to 17 cents.%u201d Pesce explained. This is understandably having anegative effect on thosehomeowners who are forced to relyon the independent retailers. %u201dr nTTT/ m T t %u25b2 tx m-n at-v m /^t t- f-irW %u00bb V '-.mm1 ^U U I o Jj/JLLj o VY A r 1 K A L r f c 1 K b b U L l SPHOENIX Claissifiied A ds^ Reach Thousands, Call 643-1032 to Place Your Ad.
