Avery .Jr. of Brooklyn Heights, director emeritus of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, has been awardedthe Veitch Memorial Medal by the Royal Horticultural Society of London, for outstandingcontributions in botany and horticulture. Dr. Averywas in Central America on an assignment for theBotanic Garden at the time of the award%u2019spresentation in early march, and it was acceptedfor him by Harold Hillier, noted English nurseryman, landscaper and seedsman.ADMITTED TO INTERNATIONAL GROUP -Joan B. Nusbaum of Brooklyn Heights has beenadmitted to membership in the International RealEstate Federation through its American Chapter,an affiliate of the International Association ofRealtors, it was announced this month.RIGHT IN THE HEART OF PARK SLOPE. These tenements on Garfield Place near SeventhAvenue may look unkempt on the outside, but the real horror is inside the apartments that are stilloccupied. Tenants at these and four other houses across the street have organized a collectiveeffort to break out of the circle of fear and desperation that plagues them. Some tenants have beenwithout heat and hot wat for up to four months, others lack electricity, door locks, sanitationservices. Several children living there have suffered rat bites, and many ave been kept from schooi by an outbreak of chest ailments. In addition there has been a history of mysterious fires,bomb threats, and other virulent forms of harassment allegedly perpetrated by their landlords.The tenants have turned to their neighbors, local community groups and a number of city agenciesfor help. A meeting was held Wednesday morning at P.S. 321 to consolidate the efforts of thoseinvolved and plan future action.UNDER CONSIDERATION FOR U.S. ATTORNEYPOST %u2014 David Trager, a professor of constitutionallaw at Brooklyn Law School and a Cobble Hillresident, is one of two men under serious consideration for appointment as U.S. Attorney for theEastern District, the PHOENIX has learned. Thedistrict covers Brooklyn, Staten island and the restof Long Island, and the post was previously held bythe late Robert Morse. A senior majoringin psychology, Camoia was one of ten Brooklynstudents honored last year and named to theBetter Brooklyn's Committee's Hall of FameW alk Out at MethodistOver Attem pt to UnionizeThere was a one-day walkout of about 170 food service, maintenance and nursing aid employees at Methodist Hospital last Tuesday, March 19th. The walkout was called in protest of the hospital%u2019s %u201clack of good faith%u201d in the efforts of these employees to unionize.In January 1973 the service employees at the hospital voted to join Local 1199, Drug and Hospital Employees Union. The hospital refused to recognize the results of the election and appealed the decision to the State Labor Relations Board, claiming election irregularities. The State Board later decided the election was fairand valid. Employee and management positions have been presented to the American Arbitration Association for a rbitration. A spokesman for the employees claimed that Methodist has not fully cooperated with the AAA, refusing to hand over a list of wage scales, the details of the pension plan and other critical information. The spokesman added further that management has indicated that it would not recognize the results of the arbitration if the decision goes against the hospital%u2019s position.Ms. Zita Fitzgibbon, Chairwoman of the hospital%u2019s Ambulatory Care Service AdvisoryCommittee, and member of the Slope Community Health Care Coalition reported Monday that 40 to 50 employees participating in the walkout were subsequently given a one-day punitive suspension.
