Nobody really came tohear about our valiant strugglesagainst the demolitioncontractor lobby, or about plansfor the upcoming Bicentennial. Itwas more like a Washington%u2019sBirthday broadloom giveaway:the minute the meeting adlourned there was a franticlineup to buy the 60-or-soavailable copies of %u201c Historic FortGreene\mitted by our community to theNew York City LandmarksCommission.Typically, I forgot my checkbook. So I'm placing an order fora copy of the second printing. You can, too, by sending yourcheck or money order for $12.50per copy to W. Gerow Schick, Jr.,Treasurer. Fort Greene Landmarks Preservation Committee,188 Washington Park, Brooklyn,N. Y. 11205. Receipt of yourcheck will be acknowledgedpromptly. Make it payable to%u201c Fort Greene Landmarks.%u201dLong ago. in the 1950%u2019s, whenmy contempraries on this blockwere growing up in places calledCheyenne and Baton Rouge, Iwas growing up in Chelsea.Being the offspring of JewishItalian atheist Commies madethings hard enough, but the factthat Mother%u2019s sandwichesweren't made with white breadmade them nearly impossible. Inthe lunchroom at recess nobodywants to trade sandwiches whenall you%u2019ve got to offer is bananaand cream cheese on pumpernickel. So I asked my mother, HowCome No White Bread? Beingmodern, she referred me toHenry Miller's nasty little essayon American food, pointing outhis vicious remarks on whitebread. Well I%u2019ve never beentempted by Taystee since, butmy virtue is expensive. Goodbread costs more because theingredients cost more. If you seethe logic in this and yourpocketbook agrees, then you%u2019reready to have your bread bakedto order by The Magic Bakers. The Magic Bakers feel theirbread is exceptional, and it is, forreasons totally %u2014 or almosttotally %u2014 out of their control. ..hence the magic. But there'snothing mystical or occult aboutthe bread, or the service. Theirpromotion promised our orderwould be filled within two days, and it was. We're now trying toanticipate our needs so we'llnever again have to run to thecorner and buy commercialbread.Their offering is impressive:fortified white with wheatgerm,; sprouted whole wheat;DAY<11PRO M PT SERVICEC. Numerous delays were encountered as various employees of the City Human R eso u rces A d m in istra tio n %u2019s Bureau of Purchase of Social Services for Adults raised question after question about the conditions of the lease after these had been previously settled. The situation was further aggravated by the changeover from the Lindsay to Beame administrations and the accompanying change of personnel and inactivity, McClure said. Finally, following threats to close the center in protest of the City%u2019s delays and after a meeting with the City attended by many[ATTENTION, Self-employed, Professionals.
