In upcoming months, postal officials will be able to determine thesuccess of the open doors on Sunday policy bykeeping a watch on the length of lines duringthe week, the number of customers using theSunday service and the amount of revenuegenerated by the new hours, according toDraney. Three employees are currentlyposted at the General Post Office on Sundays.Residents of Park Slope are also beginningto reap the benefits of changes being implemented by Carl Faszio, who stepped intocommand at the Van Brunt Station on 9th St.in August. The 34-year-old supervisor pointsto a special mobile van now situated at thecomer of Hamilton Place and 12th St. as serving the same goals as the Sunday hours at theGeneral Post Office.%u201cWe wanted to capture additional businessand provide additional service,%u201d he says. Thevan is at the comer every Monday from8:45am to 12pm and then in the afternoonfrom 1pm to 3:30pm. The service, whichbegan three weeks ago, is still beingscrutinized by postal officials for its effectiveness, but the outlook, Faszio says, is optimistic. The van provides many of the services available at regular post offices including selling stamps, parcel post and providing money orders.%u201cFor the most part mobile vans are verysuccessful and by helping us identify amarket they help us identify areas where wemay want to provide a permanent station ora postal contract unit,%u201d Faszio says.SCHUMER LAUDS CHANGESCongressman Chuck Schumer, who in pastyears has received many complaints aboutservice in the Park Slope area, lauds thelatest improvements in service. %u201cI ampleased to see the Post Office putting forth aneffort to serve our community,%u201d he said.%u201cBased on the numerous postal forums Ihave held in the past six years, it has becomeapparent that this is a much needed servicefor the Park Slope area,%u201d he added.Other changes that have taken placerecently within the Van Brunt service area isthe addition of a consumer affairs representative at the Van Brunt Station who handlescustomer complaints and inquiries from arearesidents.%u201cHe has his own separate number for people to reach him,%u201d Faszio points out, andadds that complaints at the station havedropped 40 percent over last year.Customers using the sub-station at SeventhAvenue and 3rd St. may find that lines havebeen cut down recently. Faszio added an additional employee to service one of the windows just last week.%u201cWe conduct studies that count the numberof people in line at any given time,%u201d he explains. %u201cBased on that sort of study we realized that additional help was needed there. Itis a high density area and this will helpreduce the lines,%u201d he says. The most recent changes, he says, willbenefit postal customers in the area, butmore are still to come. %u201cThere are a lot ofchanges going on but there is still a lot ofwork that needs to be done,%u201d Faszio says.NORTH FLATBUSH AVENUE BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICTFirst SaturdayChristmas Shopping Sale DayDecember 6Yoa%u2019ll find wonderful presents at special prices during ChristmasShopping Sale Day in North Flatbush Avenue from FlatbushAvenue to Grand Army PlazaWith all the money you save, you can even buy a present for yourself!Sponsored by The N orth Flatbush A venue B usiness Im provem ent D istrict %u2022 C om m itted to the com m ercialrevitilization of N orth Flatbush A venue. 2 8 2 Flatbush A venue, Brooklyn, N Y 11217 Tel: 718-789-9242Page 4, THE PHOENIX, November 27,1986
