Wishes such as a turkey dinner with all the trimmings, or simply a warmpair of socks were filled by Brooklynresidents who yearly went into the CadmanPlaza East Post Office and picked up a letterto Santa. This year, however, Operation Santa is threatened.Charlie Mazzarella, who had played Santaat the GPO for more than a decade, and infact initiated the program on a small scale in1971, will be hospitalized few the Christinasseason, leaving no one at the post office totake his place.%u201cIt%u2019s not just replacing Charlie,%u201d says JimMurphy, spokesman for the post office. %u201cIt%u2019salso finding someone who knows all thethings that he knows. Postal workers donated toys,and time and money to the effort, makingChristmas a happy time for needy children.This year, the pest office is waiting for aChristmas miracle of another sort %u2014 someone to take the sleigh%u2019s reins from Mazzarella as he recuperates. %u2014 T.G.Red Hook Is StudiedThe City Planning Commission presented apreliminary report on land use in Red Hookto the Community Board 6 Land Use Committee on Nov. 20, prompting the committeeto form a sub-committee to more closelystudy the future development and renewalpossibilities for the Red Hook area.The community board originally requesteda study from City Planning last year and thereport presented last week outlined the current land use in Red Hook, breaking down thenumber of residences, commercial properties, City-owned vacant land and privatelyowned vacant land. The report also listed theconditions of the buildings in the area, bothoccupied and vacant, based on observationsmade from the outside of the buildings\with City Planning to come up with a numberof alternatives for having the residential areadeveloped,%u201d says committee chair JerryArmer. Board Six had originally requestedthat the Housing and Preservation Department (HPD) issue Requests For Proposals todevelop the area, but the City agency declined because of the large amount ofprivately owned land.%u201cWe are looking for the rehabilitation ofresidential buildings,%u201d Armer says.
