We see these problems beset others, and, though we feel sorry for them, we tendto rationalize it away by saying %u201cit can%u2019t happen to m e.%u201dChild abduction is such a problem. Thoughit%u2019s something most parents don%u2019t want tothink about, it can happen to anyone, and agroup of Park Slope physicians has initiateda unique approach in an attempt to getparents to think about it before it is too late. The approach is video tape identification ofchildren, and the group is Physicians%u2019Private Practice, located on Union St. justbelow Seventh Ave. On November 22, thegroup sponsored a program that allowedparents of 13 youngsters to put their childrenon video tape so that, just in case the unthinkable might happen, they would have apersonal record of their child%u2019s looks, habitsand characteristics that a still photograph ora set of statistics could not provide.%u201cWhat we%u2019re really saying to people is thatit%u2019s kind of like a minute of prevention couldbe worth the hours, days and months ofagony later on,%u201d said Hank McManus, spokesman for Physicians%u2019 Private Practice.%u201cI guess people just don%u2019t want to think aboutsomething that many parents won%u2019tacknowledge. The reality is that thousands ofchildren in Brooklyn are abducted everyyear. It%u2019s really just trying to practiceprevention.%u201dOn Saturday, McManus was out on the corner of Seventh Ave. and Union St. passing outflyers to anyone who walked by with a childin tow, while inside the physicians%u2019 offices, the taping was going on. Parents andchildren alike appeared to be reacting with asort of quizzical bemusement, as parentswere intrigued by the novelty of the idea andchildren were amused by the idea of being infront of a camera. The taping itself seemed toprovide a fun approach to a serious problem. The program is sponsored by the InterFaith Medical Center, where the physiciansof Physicians%u2019 Private Practice are all onfaculty, and is assisted by the Park SlopeShopper and Video Magic. The free programmay still be repeated and special sessions forinterested parents set up. The assembly was followed bytwo workshop sessions that enabled the 35participating agencies to meet with students, explain their agencies%u2019 programs, and provide information about opportunities to workwith the agencies as volunteers.Brooklyn Friends has long been a leader incommunity service, says Principal Ralph E.Gillette. Last year, students from Friendsdevoted over a thousand hours of service tovarious agencies in Brooklyn and Manhattan. They included: Brooklyn CollegePreparatory Center for the Performing Arts,City Kids Coalition, People Against SexualAbuse, Saint Joseph%u2019s Children%u2019s Services,Mary McDowell Center for Learning,H.O.M.E., The Religious Task Force, andMethodist Hospital.Give AGift Of LVVETonrtte %u2022.
