(Phoenix/Tom asky Photo)A Dinner To Give Thanks For In The HeightsContinued from Page 1the holiday in solitude, according to one of the dinner%u2019s organizers.%u201cWe do this because Thanksgiving is a time to come together,%u201d said Pat Me Alpine, assistant director of Heights and Hill, at the church Thanksgiving day, %u201cand since many elderly don%u2019t often have a chance to do that, we%u2019re happy to help.%u201dAnd, McAlpine pointed out, the dinner comes together only with the assistance of a network of groups. Heights and Hill buys most of the food, but many groups pitch in in other ways. Grace Church buys the paper plates and other items used at the dinner. The Jubliee Senior Center buys some food. The turkeys, all 18 of them, are cooked at Cobble Hill Nursing Home. Police help in transporting the seniors to the church. Area residents and members of local churches and synagogues baked the 50 to 100 pies eaten at the dinner, and about 60 people took time out of their holidays to prepare and serve the food. To Rev. Goldwaith Sherrill, Rector of Grace Church, all this involvement is perhaps the best part.%u201cIt%u2019s really wonderful the way the different churches, synagogues and the people from all of them work together on this,%u201d Reverend Sherrill said. %u201cThey enjoy doing it, they enjoy each other and they enjoy the people they%u2019re doing it for.%u201d The reverend was obviously pleased by the universal good will and cooperation that makes the dinner, which the church has hosted every Thanksgiving for years, such a success. %u201cIt%u2019s really an ecumenical effort,%u201d he said. %u201cWe really just provide the space, that%u2019s all.%u201dIn light of all this concern and cooperation, the mood at the church was appropriately festive and jovial. %u201cIt%u2019s just beautiful to see all the people who are around,%u201d said Daisy Diamontopulos, a volunteer who helped serve the meal. %u201cI%u2019m just glad to help in any way I can.%u201d The smiles on the faces of workers and diners alike demonstrated that this spirit filled the room as much as the refreshingsunlight that poured in through the windows.For Heights and Hill, the dinner is just one example of the assistance the group provides to the elderly and homebound throughout the year. The group%u2019s efforts include a daily breakfast program for the homebound, support for senior citizens who need help getting around, entitlement counseling and many other support services. With 25 part-time staff members and four full-time social workers, the group is able to provide ample assistance to those who need it most. %u201cWe serve people who are frail, who may have no friends or relatives to help them,%u201d McAlpine said.
