He is trying not to let services be overtaken by politics,%u201d she says.According to the church iay leader, John Hall, at administrative meetings, the minister often abstains in the voting because he does not want to take sides.Schaef%u2019s biggest plans for making the church a more wholistic place lie with the new members he hopes to continue to attract. He wants to develop an extended orientation program that new people will take when they join the church. At the moment, he has begun to hold late night full moon services in the church%u2019s garden and meditation classes, but his dream is to be able to present these earthconnected activities to a new membership in a unified way. He would also like to spend more of his time with the Brooklyn Ecumenical Cooperative, a project started five years ago which recently acquired 115 housing units from the city to help keep housing affordable for low and middle income church members. But, because the church is not wealthy %u2014 the 1985 proposed operating budget was $56,000, with 50 percent set aside for Schaef%u2019s salary, Schaef does not have the time tospend on executing his dreams. He is also church secretary, musical director, and until recently, the church custodian.Sometimes, Schaef%u2019s impatience with the details that are keeping him from working on the church%u2019s future %u2014 the budget, political infighting, typing, phonecalls at all hours %u2014 shows through. At administrative meetings, he can be silent and distracted, yawning while others speak. He often rubs his wrinkled forehead and tired eyes.To his wife, Nancy, these are all signs that her husband has been working non-stop.%u201cHis job is 24 hours a day, especially since the church office is in our home,%u201d she says a bit wistfully. %u201cMost ministers take a day off a week, but Finley doesn%u2019t.%u201d Schaef does make time to read and watch Channel 13, though, and is most happy and rested when he is visiting his three sons from his first marriage who live in Upstate New York. Most ministers do not stay in one place very long, she added, but Schaef has been in Park Slope for 13 years.Schaef says it was time to %u201c sink in roots.%u201dIn the next few years, he will be trying to bring a natural, earthy environment to his city parish. He says wearily, %u201cI know, it%u2019s a superhuman task.%u201d*ark: Keep Off G rassProspect Park is seeking to enlist the help of Brooklyn parents and children in their effort to restore the original untrammeled look of the park%u2019s open space. According to the Park Horticulturist, Brenda Corbin, Prospect Park%u2019s hillsides and meadows seem to be %u201cirresistible%u201d to young people riding widetired dirt bicycles.%u201cWe%u2019ve seen young people on dirt bikes doing considerable damage to the Park%u2019s vegetation,%u201d says Corbin. %u201cHowever much fun it is for the kids, the results are bad news for the Park. Shrubbery is damaged or destroyed, grassy slopes are replaced by bare, compacted soil, and erosion is increased.%u201dWith Christmas approaching, Prospect Park officials expect to see a surge of dirt bikes in the park after the youngsters receive them as holiday gifts. The City%u2019s Department of Parks and Recreation are now asking parents to supervise their children%u2019s use of the bikes and keep them out of Prospect Park. %u2014 R .T .P A R T Y W A R E !Choose from a beautiful selection ofpaper and plastic plates with matching cups, napkins, and table cloths, plastic cutlery, party favors andmoreAT WHOLESALE PRICES---- Visit The Warehouse AtBROADWAY SUPPLY COMPANY15 C a d m a n P la z a W e s t (O ld F u lto n S t.)(b etw een F ro n t & W a te r S treets.
