Thisopportunity is afforded by PlaywrightFocus Four, a series produced by theGallery Players of new plays by Brooklynplaywrights. The series opened December 5 with%u201cLadies in Waiting%u201d and %u201cGinger Snaps,%u201dand will continue December 13 and 14 with%u201cCafe Gruere%u201d and %u201cOnce Upon a Time InSoutheast Brooklyn.%u201d%u201cLadies in Waiting%u201d was written by AnneCreed and directed by Erika K. Brown, president of Gallery Players. The play is astudy in group dynamics, placing togetherfive women who would normally nevermeet as they wait in line for a toilet thatwill never be repaired at an Appalachianfolk festival in Georgia. Although the situation is interesting and gives rise to manyamusing jokes, the show itself seemed tosuffer from the mixture of too many actingstyles.Liza Vann, as Lydia, played her role in anunderstated manner and was particularlyeffective as the wealthy sophisticate, andMarlene Ash, whose performance wasuneven, provided the play%u2019s most dramaticand touching moment when her characterrealizes she is unloved. The play workedbest when there were fewer characters onthe stage, as in the last scene between Jeff,a plumber who feels he can heal by the laying on of hands, played by Bill Horwitz, andVann%u2019s Lydia, who knows too often whatthat will lead to.%u201cGinger Snaps,%u201d a musical comedy aboutthe struggle of two college women to findlove, featured music and lyrics by CarlCatanzaro and a book by Nancy Seid.Although there were problems with the second act %u2014 it sounded as if the writersmight have run out of time %u2014 they weredwarfed by the enjoyment afforded by theenthusiasm of the actors.
