These diverse talents, Lucinda Childs, Philip Glass, and Sol LeWitt by name, have been commissioned by BAM and have come up with a series of five twenty minutes dances performed by the Lucinda Childs Dance Company against a background of filmed dance movements projected on a screen which replaces a traditional set. Music is both live and on tape, performed by the Philip Glass Ensemble.DANCE will be performed at the Brooklyn Academy ofMusic, 30 Lafayette Avenue, on Nov. 29 at 7pm, Nov. 30 andDec. 1 at 8pm, and Dec. 2 at 2pm. Tickets are $5.50., $7.50,and $9.50. But then neither should Waters have ignored it altogether; for what the film does possess, and what comedy (especially slapstick, which this is) positively thrives upon, is energy. Should there be a doctor in the Gallery Playhouse, an immediate round of B-12 is in order. One might easily speak of the players individually, but then this seems unnecessary, possibly verging upon cruel. Enough to say that all are almost uniformly wooden%u2014most a hard maple, a few knotty pine. The one notable exception is Anne Newhall who plays Elaine Harper, Mortimer Brewster%u2019s fiancee. True, Newhall is an attractive woman and it is impossible (indeed, foolish) to deny the pleasant effect of a handsome figure on stage. But it is not so much her Lord & Taylor look that captures the audience%u2019s attention as it is her adrenalin%u2014her energy. While others swallow their lines like spoonfulls of Cheerios or spiil them clumsily down their shirt-fronts to the floor, Newhall is clear and articulate while bouncing with the alacrity both plot structure and dialogue demand. %u201c Arsenic and Old Lace%u201d is a fast play: where Kesselring has intended a steady series of quick jabs, we are given clumsy round-house punches.Toward the dose of the first act Mortimer, who, you will recall, is a member of that pernicous society known as Theater Reviewer, gliblv remarks that %u201c I%u2019ll save time if I write my review on the %u2022 *v to the theater.%u201d It is only too true.%u201cArsenic and Old Lace,%u201d The Gallery Players, Old FirstReformed Church |7th Ave and Carroll St], Fri & Sat, 8:00pm; Sun, 3:00 pm.
