Their generous monetary support is, to be frank, crucial to the success of our restoration efforts. Be that as it may, there is another group of loyal donors which often doesn%u2019t receive all the gratitude it deserves. This group comes under the rather drab heading of %u201cin-kind contributors,%u201d which in clearer English signifies that they donate merchandise, supplies or services needed for our special events or volunteer program. If you think these gifts aren%u2019t as important as good hard cash, we suggest you consider how much it would cost to actually purchase the items described below. For instance, the care and maintenance of the Park%u2019s Boathouse Visitor Center has benefited from the Sears Roebuck gift of a heavy-duty vacuum cleaner. Similarly, 300 plastic trash bags from A Cleaner New York, Inc., made our recent Park Volunteer Day even more of a success; and day-lily bulbs from the Parks Council were used in planting projects this past spring. Additionally, the Volunteers in Prospect Park have sufficient gardening tools thanks to the Park Slope Civic Council (the Council actually gave us a $300 grant for this, but the money was converted into the necessary equipment so quickly we consider the donation almost in-kind).Thanks to the generosity of Dr. and Mrs.Burt Meyers, who donated an Apple He computer, and Mr. Robert Greenblatt of Direct Access, Inc., who provided a compatible printer for it, the Lefferts Homestead Coordinator now has the capability to adequately catalog and cross-reference the landmark%u2019s priceless collection. The result is a perfect example of how modem technology can serve the cause of period authenticity.Meanwhile, Brooklyn%u2019s own Heinzerling Caterers donated supplies and services for the %u201cWings over Brooklyn%u201d exhibition reception, held at Grand Army Plaza Arch, and the Great Bear Spring Company provided 120 gallons of bottled water for events at the Arch and Boathouse. Graphic designer Pamela Cucinell contributed her professional expertise for a Boathouse exhibition, and City Lighting Company donated ornamental globes for the landmark structure%u2019s bronze lampposts. There are other kinds of in-kind donations, too. Persons who have historic documents or other items relating to the Park%u2019s past are encouraged to contribute them to the Administrator%u2019s Office Memorabilia Collection (a good example of this is an excellent Park postcard collection, contributed by Mr. Louis Blumengarten, which will be used for restoration studies and future exhibits).Individuals interested in providing such in-kind gifts should contact Ms. Tupper Thomas, Prospect Administrator, at 965-8951.Announcing An idyllic O pportunityHelp Wanted: Man, Woman or Child to Work in Prime Urban Location. In fact it describes the role of Volunteers in Prospect Park, and openings are perpetually available. As it turns out, summer is just about the best time to become a V.I.P.P. The warmer weather and numerous public events ensure that Park usage is higher than at any other time of the year %u2014 so the need for dedicated Volunteers is higher, too. Whether you serve as a gardener, information center assistant or gallery sitter, you will be helping your Park when the help is most needed.Currently, V.I.P.P. teams maintain the grounds surrounding Litchfield Villa, and pursue other indoor and outdoor projects as well. On Wednesday afternoons, for instance, you%u2019re apt to find several members carefully weeding, watering and planting in the Villa%u2019s splendid Perennial Garden, which is home to everything from showy tulips to ornamental ferns and peonies. On weekends, other Volunteers take to sprucing up the shores of the Park waterways. At still other times, school groups conduct projects combining Park maintenance with environmental education. If you or your group wants to join in this pleasurable effort, fill out the coupon below and send it to the address shown. If you require more information and would like to discuss the opportunities further, don%u2019t hesitate to call Susan Moore, our Coordinator of Volunteers, at 965-8960.
