This center is not computerized.%u201dGerges renewed his call upon the hotel industry to make more rooms available in every hotel. There are a total of 461 hotels in New York City, he said, and according to the New York Convention and Visitor%u2019s Bureau, there are 100,000 hotel rooms available in the city. Last year the occupancy rate was 72 percent.%u201cI hope that both the Mayor and the Governor join with me in urging the hotel industry to provide rooms for homeless families,%u201d he said. %u201cMore rooms in better quality hotels will not only serve to improve the condition of accommodations, but will also improve the city%u2019s leverage in negotiating with the hotels now used for housing.%u201dThe Councilman added that opening up more rooms will help to disperse the concentration of homeless families in just a few areas of the city. %u201cThe hotel industry has agreed to meet with us to discuss this issue. I hope we can reach some favorable conclusions.%u201dCUNY Reacts to DeathContinued from Page 3say a misunderstanding over $700 in student aid that Hull believed had been denied him by the school may have lead to the shootings. For the students, administrators and employees at the college, life will gradually return to normal after the incident, they say, though few will forget it happened at a campus where little crime has occurred and IDs are required to be shown to gain entrance to the buildings. Dr. Emily Cozzi, the school%u2019s director of college relations, hopes the incident will prompt the state legislature to look at additional funding for large public institutions that would increase the number of counselors in the school.%u201cWe are not going to operate as an armed institution. This is a school and not a prison,%u201d she says, addressing the issue of security on the campus. %u201cUnfortunately, we are not funded to have a sufficient number of psychological counselors and financial aid counselors. When it comes to money for counseling, it%u2019s just not there,%u201d she says, adding: %u201cThe event touched us on every level from faculty to administrator to student, security guard and secretary. We want to move ahead from the incident. People in New York City tend to be very resilient and I think everyone will move ahead.%u201dIt is this resilience that one post-graduateexpresses clearly. %u201cIt%u2019s shocking. I didn%u2019t know what to think,%u201d says Thomas Ballis, a graduate of the school who was working nearby on Myrtle Street when the incident occurred. %u201cYou don%u2019t know what%u2019s going on in people%u2019s heads and that%u2019s the scary part, but it could happen anywhere, on the subway or in a store but you can%u2019t always be scared for something to happen,%u201d he says. For Marciano Almeida, the security guard usually posted at the entrance to Klitgord Auditorium, life will be slow in returning to normal. Almeida, who had left to vacation in Colorado, was replaced during that period by Holden. He read about the shootings in a Colorado paper and recognized Hull when he saw a picture of him in the paper. His feelings are a mixture of gladness that he was not there and sadness for the colleague who had substituted for him.%u201cI remember when I was leaving, she (Holden) was saying, %u2018Oh, now I have to get up at six in the morning to be at your post,%u2019 and I said, %u2018Oh, don%u2019t worry, you can make it,%u2019 %u201d he says. %u201cI felt mighty bad.%u201dA QUIET MANHis first day back to work, he says, he felt a little squeamish and did a little extra checking of the premises to make sure everything was all right. But he says: %u201cIt was one of those things you could not foresee. He (Hull) was a very quiet man. He never said anything, just showed his ID. When I saw his picture, I said, that%u2019s the man who is very quiet.%u201dFor now, Almeida says, his life will resume as before. %u201cI figure I%u2019ll still be doing my job, asking for IDs. That%u2019s my post,%u201d he says.A few students, however, did feel wary returning to the campus. %u201cYou never know when something like this is going to happen. I was scared to come to the campus, imagining that he was still there,%u201d Marie-Lyne Boute, a second year student at the school, says. %u201cI just don%u2019t want anything like this to happen again and I still have a long way to go.%u201d Another student on line at the financial aid office said his immediate reaction was to drop out, but he reconsidered.More Police at PoolCity Council Member Stephen DiBrienza says that the 76th Precinct would station a second police officer inside the Red Hook Pool facility on weekends in order to reduce the number of incidents there and contain unruliness.%u201cThis is an important step toward making the Red Hook Pool a safe and enjoyable place for area residents,%u201d says DiBrienza, whose office reported receiving numerous complaints about the Pool from community residents, including Sister Dorothy Flaum of the Visitation Church. The councilmember toured the facility July 21 with officials from the Parks Department, Sister Flaum and residents and says they found that security measures were %u201cclearly insufficient.%u201dDouble Your Closet Space AtCLOSET WORLDW ith Closet Maid Shelving &Elfa Basket SystemsClosets %u2022 KitchensBathroomsFREE DESIGN &CONSULTATION SERVICE67 Clark Street, Brooklyn, N.Y.330-0465O n ly one nam e in Brow Insurancestands for. . .%u2022 E x p e rie n c e%u2022 In n o v a tio n%u00ae S e rv ic e%u00ab L o w e r C ostBROW NSTONE AGENCY INC.111 John Street/New York, N.Y. 10038 (212) 962-5620ADAM IF o r a ll y o u rH o m eIm p ro v e m e n tn e e d s449 M yrtle Ave. 858-8814Page 4, T H E P H O E N IX , A ugust 21, 1986
