Night Out CelebratesContinued from Page / from the craft.%u201cYour presence here tonight shows that the good people wiii not iet Lhe bad people take over,\crowd. Ward, who grew up not far from the field in Bedford-Stuyvesant spoke only briefly, but told the crowd that the drug problem in New York City was not only a local problem but a national one.%u201cThere are those in Washington, D.C. who insist that it%u2019s a local problem when we know that these drugs are coming over the border,%u201d he said. %u201cThe community is not going to tolerate the crime and they need to know that.\State Senator Marty Markowitz roused the crowd by calling for an end to crack dealing in the neighborhoods and cleaning up crime in the streets. %u201cI commend the community for being here tonight. Tonight is another step in a fight that will not end until the streets are safe,%u201d he said.Auxiliary Police from the 90th Precinct attended the event in full uniform. \P olice C o m m issio n er Benjam in W ard a d %u00addresses the crow d at Boys and G irls HighSchool. (P h o en ix /K o c h Photo)very important events,%u201d Auxiliary Police Officer Abraham Caban said as he observed the crowd. %u201cWe need to meet the people and get the people themselves involved in what%u2019s happening. It%u2019s the people who are important and want this stuff to stop, and we need the people to back us,%u201d said the young officer who hopes to taKe ms police e x a m soon. The audience, comprised mostly of women, echoed their concerns for community involvement. %u201cIt is an inspiration. You get the people out and unified and you make them feel like they can do something. And if they stop being so scared of the drug dealers and the muggers then they can do something,%u201d one woman said, who wished to remain anonymous. %u201cCrack makes people afraid and we have to have unity mentally to make sure that it doesn%u2019t get worse than it already is. And it%u2019s getting worse day by day and people have to say they will work together with the police,%u201d she said. Her companion added: %u201cIf you%u2019re afraid, that%u2019s where the line stops. If people don%u2019t start working together, we%u2019re going to have chaos. By working together you get educated together and that cuts the fear down.%u201dThe event culminated on a rather strangeand somewhat violent note as a Ninja fighter demonstrated the latest techniques in bizarre street combat, transforming innocuous canes into deadly weapons and lassoeing simulated attackers with chains. But as one woman remarked: %u201cJust the fact that we are out here at ten o%u2019clock at night, together, shows how people can work together toward safety.%u201dIn Park Slope, Fifth Avenue merchant A1 Cabad organized a march that began at his doorstep and proceeded to Grand Army Plaza. %u201cWe stopped at the 78th precinct to get the captain there,%u201d says Cabad, %u201cand more people joined our cause.%u201dThe marchers, including CB6 chair Louise Finney, and Councilmember Stephen DiBrienza, carried American flags and followed a route through the Slope after a brief ceremony at Grand Army Plaza. %u201cI called for a minute of silence to commemmorate the police officers who died in the line of duty,%u201d says Cabad, adding that several other short speeches rounded out the program. Cabad said he organized the march to show his appreciation to the police.IO u r teak d in in g table has 2 hid d e n panels that extend to seat 10. $ 3 1 5 reg. 1350.
