Phoenix Back To School SectionPrivate Lives: What%u2019s New At Brooklvn%u2019s TrendAdeiphi Continues With ItsNew Cirriculum ProagramAdeiphi Academy in Bay Ridge continues to pursue its reputation for being a pace setter among independent schools through its high school-level %u201c Adeiphi Plan,%u201d which was instituted three years ago by the school%u2019s Headmaster, Dr. Clinton J.Vickers.The basic premise of this program is a belief that all students %u2014 not just a select group %u2014 can be taught how to use their minds well, excel in their studies with appropriate instruction, and develop habits of inquiry that will assist them in realizing their talents. The program, one of 14 in the country, is part of a ten year tracking program where a totally-new curriculum is structured each year. Spearheading a national movement for educational reform, Adeiphi has joined with The Coalition of Essential Schools to develop the %u201cAdeiphi Plan\ple, or role model, for other schools. In the Adeiphi Plan the emphasis is on teaching students how to think, not just what to think. Adolescents %u201clearn how to learn,%u201d and are expected to take responsibility for their own academic development. In this program, the student-as-worker is stressed rather than teacher-as-deliverer-ofinstructional-services.Student input is a focus of the Adeiphi Plan%u2019s seminar/tutorial program. Students are required to gather, organize and communicate information for use in subject discussions and analysis. In a seminar setting, with small tutorial satellite groups (less than ten students), students are helped to %u201cmaster,%u201d not just %u201ccover content%u201d in their curriculum. The tutorials provide individualized guidance to help develop the students%u2019 skills and comprehension. To stimulate the students to learn how to learn, the faculty acts as a coach through direction, counseling, motivation and presentation of material. The entire faculty collaborates in development of the curriculum and program. Core subjects in English, history, science and mathematics are interrelated; and in a progression from grades seven to twelve, motifs of identity, purpose, society and future are explored. The plan involves various modes of learning and teaching, recognizing that masteryof material is realized through a number of methods. Throughout, individual exploration and the opportunity for personal achievement according to a student%u2019s readiness and talents, are considered of prime concern.Art, music and sports play an important role in enhancing this program. Extracurricular activities round out a wide range of interests %u2014 from the student newspaper and the drama group to sports and the computer lab.The Adeiphi Plan grows out of the traditional values and goals of the Academy. As the Academy%u2019s founder said when the school opened in 1863, %u201cThe best education is that which prepares students as thinking and contributing members of their community.%u201dBerkeley Carroll Celebrates100 Years Of Slope EducationThe Berkeley Carroll Street School is in the midst of a year-long celebration of its centennial which began in April and continues through April 1987. Fall enrollment at the Park Slope school, which has locations on Lincoln Place and at 701 and 712 Carroll Street, is 540 students, up from 519 last year.As part of the continuing centennial activities for the school, there will be a centennial art exhibit and sale on September 25 and 26 at the 181 Lincoln Place building. To culminate the festivities, there will be a dinner-dance, archive exhibit, and an alumni tour in the spring.Coming this year will be a student exchange program with the College Louis Lumiere in Marly-Le Roi, France. The school will host 20 of the French students and two of their teachers for three weeks starting in the end of November. At the end of April, 15 Berkeley Carroll students will go to France. The senior internship program, which formerly had participating seniors working one day per week throughout the year, has been intensified. Participants will work full time for the month of May, in an effort to make the program worthwhile to both students and businesses. There is a new dean of the Upper School at Berkeley Carroll School. He is Robert Berkman, who is entering his third year at the school. He was formerly the chairmanof the Science Department.%u201cThe 1986-87 school year represents not only the second half of our centennial celebration, but also a year that we will graduate a true Berkeley Carroll Street School senior class,%u201d says Berkman. %u201cThese students are truly products of a system and philosophy that we have structured. I am really excited about the upcoming year.%u201dSchool opens for the year on September 8. Dr. Bongsoon Zubay, headmistress of the Berkeley Carroll Street School, said %u201cI feel a great anticipation and excitement for the coming of the 1986-87 academic year.%u201dBrooklyn Friends WelcomesA New Principal To SchoolUnder the leadership of its new principal, Ralph E.
