The prize, including a $75,000 grant endowed by the Baxter American Foundation, was awarded atthe annual meeting of the House ofDelegates of the A.H.A. in Toronto, Ontario,Canada.Donald Perkins, chairman of the selectioncommittee, said, %u201cSelecting one hospitalfrom among the four outstanding finaliststhat the committee members visited was avery difficult task. In choosing LutheranMedical Center for this prestigious award,it is important to communicate our sensethat, whether one calls it the presence of anattitude, a culture or a value structure, thehospital%u2019s mission to serve the communitywas embodied in all the people that wemet.%u201dGeorge Adams, president of Lutheran, inacknowledging the award said, %u201cWe aregrateful to the selection committee for making us its choice. They came to understandthat what makes us so unique is not the programs we have undertaken, but our point ofview and how we define our mission.%u201dAdams cited four %u201cstrong, simple butpowerful ideas%u201d by which L.M.C. lives.First, according to Adams, the hospitalhas no agenda of its own. %u201cIt is, in fact, community and market driven, doing whatits neighbois need for it to do rather thandoing what its staff wants to do,%u201d saidAdams.Second, L.M.C. has defined health aswell-being. %u201cIf you live in substandard housing, or you can%u2019t get a job because you don%u2019tspeak English and you don%u2019t have a highschool diploma.%u201d says Adams, %u201cyou are notin a state of well-being. This idea has freedus to do what we do for our community. Itlegitimizes all our activities.%u201dThird, Adams said, %u201cWe do not think ofL.M.C. as a collection of buddings orGeorge Adams, President, Lutheran Medical Center.machines or beds. Rather, it is a collectionof talented creative and committeed peoplewho are free to go into the community toserve as they are needed.%u201d And fourth,L.M.C. relates to its community in a waythat is different from the way that is traditional with hospitals. According to Adams,%u201cL.M.C. has established a partnership withits neighbors. It is a freindship in whicheach really cares about and does things forthe other.%u201dL.M.C. is a 532-bed voluntary, not-forprofit acute care hospital with a major ambulatory care component, the Sunset ParkFamily Health Center. An ultramodernfacility, located in what was, until 1977, anabandoned factory. L.M.C. served as theanchor and catalyst for the revitalization ofSunset Park, a once-deteriorated urbanneighborhood. This in turn preserved thestability of the balance of the institution%u2019sservice area, says Adams.* M \\ davidV I I h a m b e r g e r In c.serving the display needs of theBusiness W orld for over 64 years.Meet Us AtBROOKLYNWORKSPier 2, Furman St.Septem ber 23, 24, 25 Booths #229, 231We are direct manufacturers and importersno outlet is too small or too large.
