 ghetto could not be defended because
 most Jews were not prepared to fight.
 The best way to resist the Nazis, they
 felt, was through escaping to the forest
 where  they  would  join  the  partisans.
 The first group left on July 24, 1943,
 calling themselves the “Leon” unit in
 honor of Wittenberg’s resistance code-
 name.
 September 1, 1943, saw the liqui-
 dation  of  the  ghetto.  Led  by  Kovner,
 the remaining FPO  commanders is-
 sued a call for the Jews not to go “like
 sheep to slaughter,” and rose in revolt.
 When the battle seemed lost, they es-
 caped through the sewers to the forests,
 where  they  established  themselves  as
 Jewish  battalions  within  the  Soviet
 partisan movement.
 Meanwhile,  back  in  the  ghetto,
 most of those who did not join the re-
 volt – the majority – were captured and
 sent to labor camps in Estonia, where
 they  were  murdered  by  the  SS.  FPO
 members, on the other hand, now that
 they had been transformed into Sovi-
 et partisans, lived to participate in the
 liberation of Vilna by the Red Army on
